Chapter 31
Aidan dropped Evelyn off at the entrance of the complex and waved goodbye before driving away. Instead of immediately entering the complex, Evelyn waited until his car was completely out of sight before walking to the convenience store across the street.
She hadn't eaten much tonight, causing her stomach to feel very uncomfortable. If she wasn't going to eat something, it would be a rough night.
After buying some snacks and instant noodles at the convenience store, she finally walked into the complex and prepared to go home.
To her surprise, she saw Dermot standing in front of the elevator. For a moment, she suspected that the man was deliberately waiting for her there. Otherwise, how could it be so coincidental?
Pretending to be calm, she walked over without greeting Dermot as if they didn't know each other.
Both of them remained silent in the elevator, creating an especially depressing atmosphere.
Just when Evelyn thought that this silence would last until they returned to their respective homes, Dermot spoke up, "Stay away from Keith. He has ulterior motives for getting close to you."
Evelyn was startled for a moment before looking at him, "Are you talking to me?"
"Who else? Is there a third person here?" Dermot retorted with displeasure on his face.
Evelyn found it amusing and looked at him with interest as she said, "Why does Mr. Doyle think that Mr. Kartland has ulterior motives? I think he's quite nice."
Before Dermot could respond, she continued, "Besides, who I associate with is my business, and Mr. Doyle doesn't seem to have any say in it."
With just two simple sentences, Evelyn successfully provoked Dermot. "I'm not joking with you."
He spoke seriously and with a particularly stern expression, but Evelyn was completely unconcerned.
"Mr. Doyle, mind your own business," she sneered.
"Dr. Kyte! I..." The lights suddenly went out, plunging the surroundings into darkness as the elevator came to a stop.
"This can't be happening!" Evelyn was speechless and pressed the elevator button, but nothing happened.
She took out her phone and turned on the flashlight. Using the faint light, she pressed the emergency button, but there was still no response.
"The power's out!" She was annoyed. How unlucky could she be?
As she thought this, she couldn't help but complain to Dermot, "Mr. Doyle, do something. I don't want to spend the night here."
However, Dermot didn't respond at all.
"Mr. Doyle?" she called out, shining her phone's light towards him.
It wasn't until then that she noticed the tall man in front of her was sweating profusely and even his hand holding onto the elevator railing was shaking slightly.
Was he scared?
When this idea popped into her head, even Evelyn herself thought it impossible. Could Dermot really be afraid?
"What's wrong with you?" she asked softly.
After a long time, the man gritted his teeth and forced himself to say, "I'm fine. I'll call the property management."
"Okay." Evelyn nodded and immediately prepared to call the property management.
Just as she was about to do so, the dim light suddenly went out, causing Evelyn to gasp, "My phone's dead."
As soon as she finished speaking, she heard a thud, as if something had fallen to the ground. Evelyn was startled and quickly looked towards where the sound came from.
"Dermot, are you okay?" she asked while feeling her way over.
And indeed, when she felt her way over, she found Dermot sitting on the ground, trembling all over.
Evelyn confirmed that he was indeed afraid and was surprised while also grabbing his hand and saying, "Take a deep breath and try to calm down."
She also tried to demonstrate for Dermot, so that he wouldn't lose control.
"Dermot! Are you still conscious?" she asked anxiously. They had to find a way out; otherwise Dermot might be in danger.
