Chapter 1216: It's Just a Bluff
Dermot stared at Leonard for what felt like forever, totally blindsided by what he just heard.
"So, you spun this massive web of lies just to keep Cassie alive?" Dermot asked, his voice dripping with disbelief.
If Leonard had just asked, Dermot would've forked over the cash to save Cassie. Leonard was his right-hand man, after all.
Leonard broke the silence, "I had my own reasons, man."
"You always act like you're hot stuff 'cause you come from money. I wanted to show you that being rich doesn't mean squat. I can outsmart you any day. This proves I'm just as good as you, even without the silver spoon."
Dermot's sadness evaporated, replaced by a cold stare. "So, you think just 'cause you're running the Bush family now, we're on the same level? Is that why you finally showed up?"
Leonard had been in Golombia for a while. If he wanted to make an appearance, he should've done it sooner. His timing showed he was playing the long game.
"Yeah, you're right. The Bush family and the Doyle family are both top dogs in Golombia. I don't see myself as beneath you," Leonard shot back. He'd busted his butt to get the Bush family thriving, and he felt they were equals now.
Dermot chuckled, eyes full of scorn, which made Leonard's blood boil. "What's so special about you, Dermot? What makes you so damn proud?"
Dermot didn't bother replying. He figured talking to Leonard was a waste of breath.
But Evelyn wasn't having it. She snapped, "Quit the act. So what if you're the head of the Bush family? Deep down, you still feel like crap compared to Dermot. That's why you're putting on this show."
Leonard's face twisted like he'd been slapped. He pointed at Evelyn, "Shut up! Who do you think you are to talk to me like that?"
"I got here through my own hard work. You're just lucky, born into a fancy family."
Evelyn laughed, "Your own efforts? Cassie’s alive because of Dermot. And if the Bush family hadn't taken you back, you'd still be scrubbing dishes somewhere."
"You..."
"Don't act all high and mighty. You're just as much a product of your family as anyone else," Evelyn cut him off, eyes full of disdain.
Leonard was speechless because he knew she was right. Without the Bush family, he'd be a nobody.
Cassie, worried, chimed in, "Leonard, don't listen to her. So what if the Bush family took us back? You earned your spot."
The Bush family had its own drama. When Leonard first came back, no one respected him. He had to claw his way up to become the head of the family.
