Chapter 939: I'm the One Who Calls the Shots Here

Craig didn't react much to her thanks, but he was curious about Ruby's connection to the guy from earlier. "Do you know Alex?"

"Yeah, we were classmates." Ruby's attitude towards Craig softened a bit, maybe because he had just saved her.

Craig felt a sudden sense of unease. Maybe it was Ruby's bright smile at Alex or the fact that Alex had escorted her out alone. Either way, it bugged him.

"Let's go; I'll take you back," Craig said, trying to shake off his overthinking.

Ruby shook her head and pointed to the police station. "Evelyn and the others aren't out yet; I'll wait here."

Craig thought it was unnecessary, thinking Evelyn was smarter, but he didn't say it. "Alright, I'll wait with you."

At least he could spend more time with her.

Craig added, "In the future, it's best to keep some distance from Evelyn. She's surrounded by trouble. If you stay too close, you'll get dragged into it." He almost felt like he had dragged Ruby into trouble, but it turned out to be because of Evelyn.

Ruby looked at him and asked, "If it were Dermot, would you distance yourself because he got you into trouble?"

Craig hesitated, wanting to explain it was different, but under Ruby's steady gaze, he relented. "Fine, whatever you want."

Ruby was as stubborn as ever; no matter what he said, she wouldn't listen.

They waited outside the police station. After Alex checked Evelyn's statement and confirmed there was no problem, he had her released.

Just as Alex was about to interrogate Dermot, his superior called him away.

In the Chief Inspector's office, Alex stood silently as his superior scolded him.

"Release everyone immediately," his superior finally ordered.

But Alex didn't back down. "They shot in Golombia, causing a stir. Letting them go just like that would be hard to justify, don't you think?"

The incident had caught the attention of both the police and the public. It couldn't just be swept under the rug.

"Just say it was our police station training," his superior replied with a pre-prepared excuse, clearly wanting to avoid further investigation.

"These people have no regard for the law. Should we release them just because they have noble status?" Alex was frustrated. His dream of upholding justice as a police officer seemed impossible.

His superior glared at him. "What else then? Don't you know who these people are? Are you going to execute them all?"

That was clearly impossible.

Alex didn't speak, but his grim expression showed his dissatisfaction.

"Alex, listen up. You can't do whatever you want in Golombia. I'm in charge, and I want everyone released right now!" his superior commanded.

Alex wanted to refuse, but he knew his superior had the final say. He couldn't win this battle.

Turning around, he walked out of the office. Standing in the hallway, looking out the window, his anger lingered.
