Chapter 196 Rebuild in Place
The village chief walked into Dermot's tent, and Evelyn guessed that they must have reached a decision through their discussion. She was curious whether the villagers would choose to leave or stay here.
They seemed to chat for a long time, taking a full two hours before they came out of the tent. Evelyn could see the undisguised smile on the village chief's face, indicating his satisfaction with the result.
Evelyn hesitated, but decided to walk towards Dermot's tent.
"I knew you would come," Dermot smiled and spoke when she approached, showing that he expected her arrival.
Evelyn didn't argue, but asked, "What did they decide?"
"To rebuild in the same place," Dermot replied. "The village chief said the villagers have been living here for generations, so they don't want to leave."
Evelyn wasn't surprised by this outcome. "That's true. it's their hometown. How can they abandon it?"
"Afterwards, I will arrange for Todd to oversee the construction here, so you don't have to worry. Come back to Moris City with me," he said, not willing to leave Evelyn behind.
For a while, Evelyn nodded. "Okay."
Her free medical clinic would have to end early. She would have to wait until the reconstruction here is completed to see if there's a chance to come back.
"I want to take the two children with me," she spoke and told Dermot.
"The two children who lost their parents?" Dermot knew about those two children and felt sympathy for them, but Evelyn wanting to take them back... caused worries.
Evelyn nodded. "No one in the village is willing to take care of them. They can't survive here."
"So, how do you plan to take care of them when you bring them back? Are you going to raise them yourself?" He knew Evelyn was kind, but he had to remind her of the consequences of her actions.
They are not cats or dogs. Bringing them back means taking on a lifetime of responsibility.
Evelyn was hesitant. Although she had been married before, the marriage was as good as nonexistent, let alone raising children. She had absolutely no experience.
The man shook his head and sighed, "You may have a good heart, but you didn't think of an exit strategy in advance."
"So, am I supposed to just stand by and watch them struggle to survive here?" Evelyn retorted angrily.
she knew that bringing the children back would come with many difficulties. Aside from other issues, she was afraid that she wouldn't even be able to complete the adoption procedures.
Dermot pondered before saying to her, "Bringing them back is not impossible, but it's not for you to raise them. Instead, you should find someone to adopt them."
"This..." Evelyn hesitated.
"I understand your concerns, but you can't adopt them yourself. You don't qualify, and the procedures won't go through," Dermot reminded her.
Before Evelyn could say anything, he continued, "I will find reliable adoptive parents for them. There are many infertile couples in Moris City, so we should be able to find good ones."
"Can I trust that?" Evelyn wasn't sure and felt worried.
"Do you still distrust me in handling matters?" Dermot said. Even now, Evelyn didn't have much trust in him.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Evelyn said, "Okay, I'll go and ask."
"Ask them if they are willing to be adopted by someone else, and then I will bring them back," Dermot reminded. Evelyn nodded and was about to turn around and leave, but Dermot stopped her at that moment and said, "You've been asking others for so long, but haven't asked me anything?"
"Huh? You?" Evelyn glanced at him, "You seem fine, so there shouldn't be a problem."
"Who said that? I have a headache," Dermot said, as he rubbed his head, looking pained.
