Chapter 464 You Overestimate Me.
Evelyn was taken aback when she saw Dr. Baker entering her office. Lassie approached her with an awkward smile, unsure of how to face Evelyn. But for the sake of her grandfather, she had to gather her courage and speak up.
"Dr. Kyte," Lassie said, managing to greet her despite feeling embarrassed. Evelyn remained seated, looking at Lassie who stood before her.
"Yes, Miss Baker-" Evelyn answered in a polite manner.
"Er, do you have a minute?" Lassie inquired.
Could it be because Dermot broke up with her and she reluctantly came to me for trouble? Evelyn wondered to herself.
It was understandable that Evelyn would be inclined to think that way, considering that every woman associated with Dermot never brought good news.
"Yes." Lassie nodded and took a seat opposite Evelyn.
Evelyn remained silent, waiting for Lassie to bring up the matter that had brought her here.
However, Lassie fell into silence as well, seemingly unsure of how to approach the topic. She just felt awkward, especially since she and Dermot were previously a pretend couple, essentially boyfriend and girlfriend by title only...
"Dr. Kyte, have you reconciled with Dermot?" Lassie couldn't help but ask, thinking that it had been some time since she left and Dermot should have explained everything to Evelyn by now, right?
Evelyn furrowed her brow caught off guard by Lassie’s question, she had mistaken Lassie's serious expression earlier as an indication of a proper matter. She didn't expect it to be about Dermot again.
"Miss Baker, if you've come just to discuss this, then you can leave. We're at work, there is no time for idle chat," she said, pointing towards the door, signaling for her to leave.
Lassie felt embarrassed, but she braved herself to continue, "I'm sorry, that's not what I meant. I did come today with a legitimate reason."
"Then just say it." Evelyn said impatiently.
"Okay," Lassie nodded, having roughly figured out Evelyn's personality.
"The reason I came today was to ask if you could perform a surgery on my grandfather in Colombia," she said, handing her grandfather's medical case report to Evelyn.
Unfortunately, Evelyn didn't reach out to take it immediately, instead she looked at Lassie with interest, somewhat bemused, she asked. "Miss Baker, the doctors in Colombia are no less capable than me, so why go through the trouble?"
"I've already consulted with them, and they all said that there's no need for surgery in my grandfather's condition, but I cannot accept that," Lassie said directly.
She couldn't bear to see her grandfather go on like this, so even if there was only a glimmer of hope, she wanted to give it her all.
Evelyn had to admit that Lassie's words made Evelyn think highly of her as a filial child.
Considering this, Evelyn took the medical case from her hands and began reading it.
Soon, after going through the case, her expression turned unusually grave before she said, "Miss Baker, indeed, there's no need for surgery in your grandfather's condition."
"This...," Lassie felt an inexplicable sadness in her heart. She had thought that coming to Evelyn would result in a different outcome.
Seemingly aware of what she was thinking, Evelyn smiled and said, "I'm no different from any other doctor. You've overestimated me."
"Is there really no chance at all?" Lassie persisted. Whether it was her imagination or not, she saw a hint of amusement in Evelyn's eyes, making her feel that there may yet be a way.
Evelyn remained silent, flipping through the medical case once again, lost in thought.
Observing her, Lassie became more certain that she hadn't misjudged, "Dr. Kyte, I beg you to save my grandfather. As long as you can save him, I'm willing to do anything."
Just as Lassie was about to kneel down, Evelyn was taken aback and quickly stood up to stop her. "Don't get so worked up. I'm just offering choices. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide."
