Chapter 11
After hanging up, Dermot turned and walked back into the ward.
"Dermot..." Noticing Dermot's grim expression, Cassie felt uneasy.
"Why did you deliberately bring up my divorce?" he asked, looking at the woman on the bed. She went too far. He wondered if it was because he had been too indulgent with her over the past two years.
Cassie was stunned for a while. Then, she bit her lip and said with grievance, "I was just worried that Dr. Kyte might misunderstand something about you."
"Really? Or did you want her to know I was married?"
His tone was harsh. He had seen through her scheming.
"Dermot, I..." She wanted to deny it, but meeting Dermot's piercing gaze, she realized her little schemes couldn't deceive him.
"I hope there won't be a next time, understood?" His cold words left no room for argument.
Cassie nodded. As he turned to leave, she gathered her courage to ask, "Dermot, why do you care so much about Dr. Kyte? Why?"
As Dermot sat in the car, leaving the hospital, the question Cassie had asked him still lingered in his mind.
Why?
He couldn't come up with an answer.
Perhaps he was driven by mere curiosity for Evelyn's strange hostility and wanted to figure out the reason. Nothing more.
Suddenly, his phone rang, pulling him back from his contemplation. Irritated, he rubbed his forehead and answered the call, "Say it."
"Mr. Doyle, I've checked your travel records for the past five years, and there doesn't seem to be any overlap with Dr. Kyte's itinerary.”
"However, it's strange that Dr. Kyte disappeared two years ago, and no one knows where she went, making it difficult to trace her whereabouts during these past two years.”
"Shall we ask Mr. Irvine for help in investigating?" Todd suggested.
Craig was the king of the underground world, capable of finding information that couldn't be uncovered in the open. That's why Todd made the suggestion.
After a brief silence, just when Todd thought Dermot would agree, he heard him say, "No need. She's just a doctor, no need to pay excessive attention."
Todd was puzzled. Dermot was letting it go?
Before he could ask further, the call had already ended. Todd had no choice but to drop the subject.
A few days later, Evelyn personally handled Cassie's discharge procedures, releasing her from the hospital.
"Although the lesion has been successfully removed, there is still a possibility of recurrence, so remember to come to the hospital for regular check-ups. Also, don't be too careless in your daily life, and take care of yourself," Evelyn reminded her at the hospital entrance.
"Okay." Cassie nodded. "Thank you, Dr. Kyte."
"How are you going back? A taxi?" Evelyn looked around and was somewhat surprised to see no one coming to pick her up.
She hadn't seen Dermot for several days and thought he would come today to pick up Cassie. At that moment, she suddenly started having doubts about whether he truly cared about Cassie or not.
Before she could finish her thought, Cassie pointed to a car approaching not far away and said, "Dermot is here to pick me up."
Upon hearing this, Evelyn looked over.
The car pulled up beside them, and Dermot stepped out. Despite not having seen each other for a few days, he maintained a cold expression, devoid of any hint of happiness or anger.
"Is everything taken care of?" he asked, looking at Cassie.
"Yeah, thanks to Dr. Kyte, she helped me with everything," Cassie replied, her gaze shifting between Dermot and Evelyn.
She remembered the question she had asked Dermot a few days ago. Despite he didn't give an answer, but Cassie had a feeling about it.
However, upon closer observation, she felt that Dermot didn't seem to have any special feelings toward Evelyn. Maybe she was just overthinking?
Dermot opened the car door and said, "Let's go."
"Okay." Cassie nodded. "See you, Dr. Kyte."
"It's probably best if we don't see each other again." Evelyn waved with a smile. After all, she was a doctor, and meeting again usually meant bad news.
Unfortunately, Dermot didn't get the joke. He took it as another jab at him, and his face immediately darkened.
Once Cassie got into the car, Dermot swiftly walked toward the driver's seat without uttering a word to Evelyn, not even sparing her a glance.
Evelyn didn't mind. She had expected this attitude. After all, Dermot was the esteemed Mr. Doyle, and she was just a small figure who shouldn't be taken seriously by him.
As Dermot started driving away, Cassie glanced at him several times. She couldn't tell if it was just her imagination, but Dermot seemed to be in a bad mood.
"Dermot, don't take what I said earlier to heart. I was just speaking casually." She couldn't help but explain.
Dermot made a grunt of acknowledgment and continued driving.
Before long, Dermot dropped Cassie off at home. "Take good rest. If you feel unwell, give me a call."
"Dermot, do you have to go back to work?" She felt disappointed, assuming that he would accompany her.
"Yeah, there's a lot of work at the company." He nodded, not saying much more. He turned and got back into the car, disappearing from Cassie's sight.
Cassie watched the car leave, biting her lip, eyes filled with frustration.
But soon, she pushed it aside.
Her health was the priority at that moment. There would be plenty of opportunities in the future. She must be patient.
In Barberts Apartment.
Watching Ruby stand in front of her with a big suitcase, Evelyn was speechless. "You've run away from home again?"
"Bingo! You guessed it," Ruby chuckled and walked into the living room with her luggage.
"What's the reason this time?" Evelyn closed the door and asked casually.
"My husband wouldn't buy me the latest designer bag, and he even made me go to work at the company. Can you believe it?" she blurted out while pulling her luggage inside.
Evelyn sighed, feeling helpless. "Weren't you traveling abroad? When did you come back?"
Hearing the questions, Ruby approached her with a serious expression. "I heard that you got divorced, so I rushed back in a hurry.
"Tell me everything on the way. I'm starving." With that, she pulled Evelyn out of the door, ready to find something to eat.
After Evelyn briefly explained the situation, Ruby looked at her as if she were looking at a fool. "You're too easy on that bastard Dermot! You didn't ask for anything.
"I'm telling you, with a guy like him, you should've asked for a big sum. Don't be too lenient on him.
"I never liked him. If he was anyone but Dermot, I would've beat him up for you."
As they waited for the elevator, Ruby went on a rant.
Furious, she spoke loudly, not even noticing someone creeping up behind them.
"Dermot is such a jerk! I'd give him a harsh beating for your sake." Ruby felt that Evelyn deserved better, especially considering she got divorced without asking for anything. It made her blood boil.
"Is that so? Come on. Show me what you've got."
Hearing the cold and eerie voice behind them, Evelyn and Ruby were shocked and gingerly turned around in disbelief.
