Chapter 544 You Don't Trust Me

Kevin didn't linger in the sterile hospital room. Despite his desire to remain by Evelyn's side, he recognized her need for solitude and rest during her recovery. Thus, he refrained from imposing his presence any longer.Upon Kevin's departure, Evelyn began to return her missed calls, starting with Sarah and then moving on to Blake. She chose not to disclose her injury, instead attributing her unresponsiveness to a switched-off phone. Her decision to withhold the information from Sarah was born out of a desire to spare her friend unnecessary worry. As for Blake, she felt that divulging her injury would have little to no impact. At present, without any tangible evidence implicating Dora and Lucia, voicing such allegations could potentially lead Blake to believe she was merely causing a stir or laying a trap for the mother-daughter pair.Evelyn understood that she needed irrefutable proof to present to Blake, evidence that would reveal Dora and Lucia's true colors. She needed him to take action against them. This was the real reason she had kept Kevin at arm's length.Without seeing through their charade, Blake would never experience true disappointment in them.Once she had finished returning her calls, Evelyn dialed Dermot's number. The phone rang for a while before it was finally answered."Did you need something?" Evelyn inquired, curious if Dermot had seen the news stories circulating online. On the other end, Dermot answered, his gaze fixed intently on the news articles featuring Evelyn and Kevin displayed on his computer screen."Why was your phone off?" he managed to ask, barely keeping his frustration in check.Evelyn paused for a moment, deciding to also withhold the information about the attack from Dermot. She knew he would worry and might even confront Dora and Lucia impulsively. She dismissed his question with a vague excuse and quickly shifted the conversation, "Was there something you wanted to discuss?""Not really," Dermot responded. An uncomfortable silence ensued, with neither of them speaking for a while.Feeling the tension, Evelyn felt compelled to break the silence, "Have you seen those news stories circulating online?"Dermot merely hummed in response. He knew he should trust Evelyn, and besides, they had no formal ties binding them. He had no right to question her."It's all nonsense," Evelyn reassured him. "Kevin and I share a mentor, you're aware of that."Dermot was well aware that Kevin was Evelyn's senior, which was precisely why it pained him.Kevin's interest in Evelyn was evident, and their growing closeness was hard for anyone to miss. Hailing from the prestigious Sackler family, Kevin was certainly a match for Evelyn in terms of social standing.Dermot had never placed much emphasis on matching social status, but when it came to his own, he couldn't help feeling somewhat inferior. He remained silent, but Evelyn's frustration was mounting. "Do you genuinely believe there's something more between Kevin and me?"A feeling of indescribable loss began to creep into her heart. Dermot hadn't noticed she was unconscious in the photo, and even though she was willing to overlook it and had taken the initiative to explain, she couldn't believe he could suspect her."I trust you. I just don't trust him," Dermot finally said.Evelyn retorted, her voice laced with irritation, "Dermot, don't be so narrow-minded. Kevin and I have nothing to hide. It's not what you're imagining.""Narrow-minded?" Dermot shot back, his tone heated. He wondered, 'Am I overanalyzing Kevin's interest in Evelyn? I trust my instincts on this. Men tend to read other men accurately.'"You're not narrow-minded?" Evelyn challenged, her frustration morphing into laughter. "You've been staring at that photo for so long, and you didn't notice I was unconscious?""You might not have noticed that I was unconscious, but I thought you would at least trust me. Now I see how naive I was."
