Chapter 521 Ulterior Motives

Their faces drew closer and just as their lips were about to meet, an ill-timed ring from Evelyn's phone snapped them back to reality.

Evelyn coughed to ease the awkwardness, snatched her phone from the table, and answered, "Hello?"

"Everything's ready," she told the person on the other end.

After hanging up, Evelyn met Dermot's gaze again, only to find him smiling at her. With flushed cheeks and avoiding eye contact, she said, "My driver's about to pick me up for the venue."

"Right, sounds good," Dermot said, composed in contrast to Evelyn's evident embarrassment.

While she felt the sting of what might have been, he was not in a rush. At least it was good news.

Waving goodbye, Evelyn headed out.

Dermot watched as she got into the Kyte family's car and disappeared down the street. Then he stepped out and melded into the flow of the city.

Inside the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Evelyn regained her composure and turned to Blake, "You know, I could have gone alone. There was no need for you to come with me."
"As your father, of course I'd be there with you," he assured her. Without him by her side, who knew what the chattering elite at the party would say about Evelyn.

By simply standing with her, he conveyed a clear message: Evelyn was under his protection, and nobody was going to push her around.

Evelyn, foregoing further conversation, gazed out the car window in silence, much to his resolve.

In her silence, Blake was reminded of Evelyn’s mother, who also had the habit of quietly watching the world beyond the glass...

"Evelyn, consider coming back to Columbia—this is your real home," Blake couldn't help but say after a long pause.

He knew that Evelyn had her circle of friends and a career waiting for her in Moris City, and she would likely return soon. But having only recently reconnected with his daughter, he wasn’t ready to let go, yearning instead to spend more time together.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, deep in thought before responding, "I still have matters to attend to back in Moris City."

"I'll have someone take care of it for you," Blake offered.

"It has to be me," she declined, feeling a twinge of discomfort at the look of disappointment in Blake's eyes. Perhaps this was the unspoken bond of blood. Even as she claimed not to forgive Blake, she found it impossible to harbor any real resentment against him.

Sighing, she continued, "Once I've settled everything in Moris City, I’ll come back to Columbia."

At her words, Blake's face lit up with disbelief. "Is that what I think it means?"

"Yes," Evelyn nodded.

Her decision to relocate the company's headquarters to Columbia meant she would likely settle down there for the long haul, leaving Moris City in her rearview.

"That's wonderful," Blake repeated, his joy unmistakable.

After a pensive moment, as though struck by a sudden thought, Evelyn suggested, "If you’re free, you could come with me to Moris City, take a break, clear your head."

Blake was taken aback. He hadn't expected this request.

While he weighed his decision, Evelyn continued, "I won't keep it from you—I'm heading back to bring someone to Columbia. But, it's complicated. This person has considerable influence in Moris City. If I go alone, I might not be able to bring them back."

She laid bare her intentions, which, in essence, meant enlisting Blake's help to bring Ruby back to Columbia.
