Chapter 568 The Repeated Confession
At noon, Evelyn and Niall shared a meal, a simple yet intimate lunch. Later, she made a point to visit John, gently reminding him to focus on his studies. Thus, she concluded her busy day.
As evening fell, within the secluded confines of a restaurant's private dining room, Evelyn raised a glass in gratitude. She thanked her department for their unwavering support and cooperation throughout the past weeks.
The department leader was particularly sentimental about her impending departure. He harbored a fear that without her, his team would crumble.
His only solace lay in Evelyn's promise to return for surgeries and to lend her expertise for any challenging cases that may arise.
The atmosphere was buoyant, despite the undercurrent of reluctance to see Evelyn leave so soon. Nevertheless, they admired her greatly and wished her a pleasant journey.
Evelyn was a remarkable doctor, hailing from a powerful family. Her presence commanded admiration from all who encountered her.
As the dinner progressed and the drinks flowed freely, Evelyn excused herself to the restroom. She had indulged a bit too much and was feeling slightly dizzy.
The cold water she splashed on her face served as a refreshing wake-up call. Revitalized, she exited the restroom.
"Dr. Kyte," Bruno Mullen approached her, his face etched with anxiety.
Evelyn acknowledged him with a nod, "Dr. Mullen."
"Are you really going to leave Moris Hospital?" he queried, his tone suggesting he had more to say.
Evelyn nodded in affirmation. After all, wasn't that the reason they had all gathered for this meal?
Bruno Mullen sighed heavily, his words tumbling out, "Dr. Kyte, I...I love you."
Evelyn was taken aback by his declaration.
If her memory served her right, Bruno Mullen had expressed similar sentiments when she first joined the hospital. She had declined then, explaining that she had just divorced. Since then, Bruno had remained silent on the matter.
Evelyn had assumed he had moved on, so why bring it up now?
"Sorry, Dr. Mullen. I only see you as a colleague," Evelyn declined once more, this time with more clarity.
Just a colleague, not even a friend.
"I know." Bruno Mullen nodded, his smile tinged with pain. "I know you've always seen me as a colleague and that's what hurts."
"Now you're leaving, and who knows if we'll ever meet again. I felt I had to confess, even if you would reject me. It doesn't matter."
Evelyn found herself at a loss for words, choosing silence as her response.
"Dr. Kyte, won't you even consider me? I could move to Colombia with you. I can do anything for you," Bruno pleaded, his eyes radiating love.
He was well aware of Evelyn's status and knew that if they were together, he wouldn't need to continue his medical career. Instead, he could live a life of luxury and wealth.
That's why he chose to express his love again, hoping his charm could sway Evelyn.
Yes, his charm could sway her.
He was quite confident in his masculine allure. He had many admirers within the hospital.
Evelyn offered an awkward smile, "I'm sorry."
She barely knew Bruno Mullen and couldn't fathom his thoughts.
Seeing her rejection, Bruno accepted it with a heavy heart. Though it pained him, and knowing this would be the closest he would ever get to Evelyn, he couldn't let go.
He couldn't force her to reciprocate his feelings. He was well aware of Evelyn's strength and certainly didn't want to mess with the formidable Kyte family.
"Alright, I understand." Bruno nodded to Evelyn, not pressing the matter further. This allowed Evelyn to breathe a sigh of relief.
She was on the verge of leaving and didn't want to stir up any more trouble.
They returned to the private dining room one by one. Evelyn resumed her drinking with her colleagues, while Bruno rejoined his girlfriend at their table.
Yes, his girlfriend.
He had recently started dating a junior nurse, but he was not content with this relationship. He felt a junior nurse was beneath him, which was why he had declared his love for Evelyn once more.
"Where have you been?" Bruno's girlfriend asked suspiciously, her eyes filled with doubt.
