Chapter 441 Do We Make Up?
At Century's Apartments, Evelyn followed Dermot and watched as he took out the keys to open the door.
"Come in." Dermot pushed the door open and turned to look at Evelyn after turning on the living room lights. Evelyn hesitated but eventually walked in.
After putting away her luggage, she sat on the couch and stared at Dermot without making any other movements. Clearly, she was waiting for this man to explain his relationship with Ava.
Dermot sighed, well aware of Evelyn's intentions. He helped her put her luggage in the room and brought a first aid kit. "Don't move, I'll clean your wound first."
Evelyn pursed her lips. This man knew exactly what she wanted to know, but he stubbornly refused to say. It was so annoying. Soon, the wound was cleaned and, just as Evelyn wondered what he was going to do next, Dermot sat down beside her.
"Ava and I were classmates in college," Dermot began, seemingly lost in memories. Watching him like this made Evelyn feel uneasy, but she didn't interrupt and waited for him to continue.
"Back then, we had a good relationship and spent a lot of time together. Naturally, some feelings developed," Dermot didn't deny that he had feelings for Ava.
"But in the end, she had to go abroad, so we didn't end up together," Dermot explained. Moreover, so many years had passed, and he had long forgotten about this person.
Seeing that he seemed to have finished explaining, Evelyn felt displeased. "So, you loved her but couldn't have her, and that's why you used me as a substitute?"
Dermot's face immediately turned dark, and he looked at Evelyn seriously. "I've told you before, you're not a substitute for anyone."
"If you hadn't said it, I wouldn't have noticed the resemblance between me and her," Evelyn added.
It was only after Evelyn pointed it out that he vaguely felt the similarity between the two. Evelyn didn't believe him. Anyone who saw Ava's photo could easily tell that they looked alike. How come Dermot couldn't see it?
"Evey, didn't we promise to trust each other?" Dermot looked at her, feeling particularly heavy-hearted.
Evelyn didn't meet his gaze. Although he had explained himself, she still had a hard time believing him. Perhaps Dermot had told too many lies, and she couldn't distinguish between truth and lies.
"Why didn't you tell me when your father came back?" Evelyn asked. She felt that such a significant matter, should have been told to her by Dermot.
Dermot didn't know if the matter with Ava was really over, so when she asked about Benjamin, he truthfully replied, "I didn't want to hide it from you. I just wanted to wait until after everything was resolved before telling you."
Evelyn remained silent, but her eyes said it all. Dermot felt helpless and continued to explain.
"Although he has been away for many years, he still carries the title of Chairman of the Doyle Group and holds a fair amount of power. I was afraid he would harm you, so I ...I agreed to break up with you." he said.
"So, you being with Lassie is a way to make your father relax?" Evelyn asked.
The man nodded, "Yes, it really is. It's a cooperation between Lassie and me. Her parents were forcing her into blind dates, and I needed someone to help me catch Benjamin's attention."
Evelyn couldn't tell if Dermot was telling the truth or not, she struggled to discern it, "Alright, I understand."
At this point, regardless of the truth, it seemed there was nothing else they could do or say. "So... are we ok? Is everything sorted now?" Dermot weakly asked, lacking confidence.
Evelyn glanced at him and then said, "Although you have reasons for what you said and did, breaking up is not something to play with. Therefore, we are still broken up."
