Chapter 964: The Plan Must Be Advanced
Evelyn didn't quite agree. "If he set up Gerald's death, why'd you go along with it? You knew he was playing you, but you still agreed. Did you two make a deal?"
Joshua wasn't dumb; he wouldn't take a bad deal.
Right now, Joshua felt stuck. He got nothing from Dermot.
He went along because Dermot threatened to reveal his identity to Evelyn. If he hadn't worried about how Evelyn would see him, he wouldn't have let Dermot control him.
Who knew his secret wouldn't stay hidden and would come out to Evelyn anyway?
If he'd known, he might've just told Evelyn the truth from the start and avoided being Dermot's pawn.
"Thanks for saving me with Randy," Evelyn said. "But Dermot probably had no choice. He didn't have as many people as you. That's why he asked for your help."
Evelyn didn't see anything wrong with that. If she were Dermot, she'd have done the same.
"Evelyn, don't you see you're always siding with Dermot now?" Joshua chuckled, but his smile was bitter.
If he couldn't see Evelyn's clear bias, he'd be a fool.
Evelyn realized it and didn't deny it. "Yeah, I trust he wouldn't use me."
Joshua's eyes darkened, and he looked down, hiding the flash of anger.
"Alright, if you trust him, what can I say?" He smiled bitterly, out of words.
After a brief silence, they finished their meal and walked to the restaurant entrance together.
As the conversation soured, Joshua felt uneasy. "Evelyn, we're still friends, right?"
"Of course," Evelyn nodded. "You're still the department manager at Kyte Group."
But that was it.
Evelyn stopped trying to persuade Joshua, knowing he wouldn't listen. She accepted their paths were diverging, and they'd grow distant.
Joshua forced a smile. "If I hadn't gone abroad, things might've been different."
Maybe he'd have been with Evelyn, and Dermot wouldn't have been a problem.
Evelyn smiled but didn't respond.
As Joshua drove Evelyn back to the hospital, a heavy silence filled the car.
Soon, they arrived at the hospital. Evelyn got out and felt a strange relief.
"I'll be off. Drive safe, Joshua." Evelyn waved and walked into the hospital.
Joshua just watched her leave.
He knew he had to speed up his plan; otherwise, he'd lose his chance.
Even if his plan was shady, he had to try to be with Evelyn.
Inside the hospital, Evelyn, already busy, had no clue about Joshua's plans. That afternoon was Amelia's surgery, something she'd prepped for a long time. Maybe because she'd spent a lot of time with Amelia, she took this surgery very seriously and aimed for perfection.
So, as soon as Evelyn got to the hospital, she started prepping for the surgery. Joshua was out of her mind once she got busy.
