"Don't flatter yourself," Evelyn chuckled dismissively. "The only reason I haven't called you out is that your schemes are beneath my notice. As for your acceptance, it's irrelevant to me."
With undisguised ridicule in her gaze, she said to Lucia, "Why should I care whether you accept me or not? Do you really think you're that important?"
Lucia clenched her fists and hissed at Evelyn, her voice a low, venomous whisper, "Evelyn!"
If it weren't for the crowd surrounding them, she might have impulsively lunged at her adversary. Of course, Lucia was well aware she couldn't match Evelyn's strength, but her anger clouded her judgment at that moment.
"I warned you. Don't mess with me," Evelyn cautioned, closing in with a menacing aura.
Lucia, though intimidated, tried to stand her ground and returned Evelyn's glare with defiance.
"If that’s the case, don't blame me for not being nice." Blake's affection was what Lucia treasured most, so Evelyn decided that was exactly what she'd target.
Their tense confrontation was abruptly interrupted by the approach of another person.
Evelyn shed her threatening demeanor and looked up in surprise. "Kevin?"
"Hey, Evelyn," Kevin Sackler greeted her with a warm smile.
Evelyn stepped past Lucia, ignoring her, and walked up to Kevin. "What are you doing here?"
Her genuine surprise was evident. While Kevin, like her, had been a disciple of Mr. Smith, he rarely attended lessons, often occupied elsewhere. Evelyn had seldom seen him during her time with Mr. Smith.
However, their bond remained strong. To Evelyn, Kevin was like family, so naturally, she was thrilled to see him.
"The Sackler family has business in Columbia," Kevin stated, not elaborating on the nature of their enterprise.
Evelyn wasn't naïve. She had researched Columbia's prominent families and was aware of the Sackler family's standing. "I had no idea you had such connections."
Previously, she had simply assumed that Kevin was a wealthy heir casually taking lessons from Mr. Smith. It turned out she had been mistaken.
Kevin jested lightly, "Oh, I'm nowhere near your league, Evelyn."
Evelyn responded, "I've only recently come to know that myself."
"Don't worry about it, it's all good. Here in Columbia, I’ll watch your back. No one would dare give you any trouble." He had always wanted to look out for Evelyn. Back then, he was the heir to the prestigious Sackler family fortune, while Evelyn was just an average person.
Putting aside whether Evelyn needed his protection, the stark difference in their social statuses meant that their paths weren't meant to cross too often. So, even though he admired Evelyn, he never contemplated taking things any further.
Now, circumstances had changed, and they found themselves on equal footing.
Evelyn thanked him sincerely, touched by his words. "I haven't had the chance to thank you for helping me out at the Moris City auction the other day."
She had faced skepticism regarding the authenticity of a painting attributed to Mr. Smith during the auction, and it was Kevin who had come to her aid. Unfortunately, he had left abruptly, and she hadn't been able to express her gratitude at the time.
Finally, the opportunity had presented itself.
"There's no need for formalities with me. There will be plenty of chances in the future," Kevin said nonchalantly. He had just happened to be in Moris City on business and wanted to check out his mentor's painting at the auction.
He hadn't expected to encounter Evelyn there, let alone see her auctioning the painting. At the time, he had been somewhat critical of her, believing she had sold the artwork out of financial necessity.
His stay had been brief, and he hadn't anticipated their next encounter under these circumstances. If he had known, he would have extended his time in Moris City.
