Chapter 1005 I Came For You

"Done." Laura sauntered over, throwing a flirty glance at Cassie.

Cassie was about to say something when she noticed Joseph looking their way. Even from a distance, his gaze made her uneasy. "You didn't tell him anything, did you?"

"Nope." Laura shook her head. "He probably has no clue you're worried about him."

"I'm not worried about him at all," Cassie snapped.

"Don't lie. I know you well." Laura draped an arm around her shoulder. "He was the guy you loved. Seeing him like this, it's natural to feel a mix of hate, sympathy, and other stuff you can't even name."

"Shut up. I'm going to find David. I don't want to talk to you anymore." Cassie pushed her away, her face darkening as she turned to leave.

Cassie set off to find David, but Laura's words kept replaying in her mind.

Sure, she used to hate Joseph, but seeing him get bullied didn't make her happy.

Still, she refused to admit she was worried about him.

'How could I be worried about him? It was all for Sophia's sake.'

After wandering a bit, she finally found David on the second floor, entertaining a few slightly overweight middle-aged men.

They didn't look like business types; more like political bigwigs.

David was laughing and chatting with them, looking pretty sycophantic.

Seeing this made Cassie uncomfortable.

This wasn't the David she knew. In her mind, David was always gentle and refined, not this guy currying favor.

This version of David felt alien to her. She knew she shouldn't feel this way; everyone in business had to play the game.

She even remembered David's earlier offer to come to the party with her.

She wondered, 'Is David really afraid Joseph will steal me away? Or is he just here to network with these big shots?'

"Is this the husband you mentioned? David's quite the suck-up." Joseph's cold voice suddenly cut in.

Cassie turned to see his mocking, handsome face, and it felt like a thorn pricked her heart. "At least he's better than you. Even if you wanted to suck up, no one would care."

"Right, I want to suck up to you, but you ignore me." Joseph's gaze softened as he looked at her.

Cassie's mouth twitched. Before she could react, Joseph pulled her aside.

"Joseph, let go of me." Cassie lowered her voice, trying to shake off his hand, nervously glancing towards David, afraid he might see them.

"Don't worry. He's all about Mr. Dixon right now. He won't notice you." Joseph pushed open a small door nearby, pulling her inside and pinning her against the wall.

The room was dark, and Joseph's body loomed over her. His scent filled her nostrils, making Cassie uneasy. She lowered her voice and asked, "Joseph, why did you bring me here?"

"Don't you want to know who Mr. Dixon is?" Joseph dodged her question, shifting the topic.

"Mr. Dixon is the Vice President-elect for next year. David's working hard to get in his good graces, which is probably why he's here tonight."

Cassie was floored. She thought David was just networking with some influential folks, but the future Vice President? That was a whole different ball game.

"There's more. Mr. Dixon is a partner of Carl. By cozying up to Mr. Dixon, David's also linking up with Carl." Joseph's eyes softened as he looked at her. "Do you know why Mr. Dixon is even giving him the time of day?"

A chill ran down Cassie's spine. "Maybe David already knew him. What's so weird about that?"

"You are wrong. David doesn't know him at all. He wouldn't have a chance to meet Mr. Dixon," Joseph said calmly. "Tonight, the Jude family gave Laura a lot of face, inviting big shots from both politics and business. They wanted to show everyone how much they value Laura and affirm her future status in Madison."

"So what?" Cassie still didn't get his point.

"When you and David arrived, Laura personally greeted you and introduced you to Violet. Everyone there is sharp; they'd naturally think David knows Violet and Laura, which would make them see him differently. He used this connection to get close to Mr. Dixon." Joseph's gaze turned icy.

If he had doubts about David before, tonight confirmed them.

He wouldn't let Cassie be with someone as two-faced as David.

Cassie was stunned. She had suspected David's real motive was to network, but Joseph's explanation made David seem even more calculating.

She furrowed her brows, then looked up at Joseph's handsome face and sneered. "Fine, even if everything you said is true, so what? Are you trying to say David's shady? Joseph, everyone in business has to climb the ladder. Flattery and networking are part of the game. David wants to solidify his position. It's only natural to try to meet the Vice President. And you, aren't you here tonight to expand your network and meet influential people?"

"I'm not." Joseph's lips barely moved as he denied it. "I came because I knew you'd be here."

Cassie's face instantly flushed, feeling awkward. She could only glare at him, her eyes saying, "Do you think I'm stupid?"

Joseph looked at her bright eyes and suddenly curved his lips into a sexy smile. "Thanks for having Laura help me out earlier."

"When did I ask Laura to help you?" Cassie sneered. "Don't flatter yourself."

"I'm not flattering myself. I just think you're kind-hearted." Joseph's smile was full of ambiguity.

"Go away. I want to leave." She pushed against him, but he wouldn't budge.
