Chapter 1413 How Did Michael Become Like This?
9 PM.
Laura had just finished her bath when she heard a car pull up outside.
Wrapped in her robe, she walked out to see Michael coming in, holding Maeve and giving her a kiss.
"Mrs. Jude," Thea called out.
Michael saw Laura and immediately came over to hug her.
"Why are you back so late? What kept you?" Laura pushed against his chest, her voice sharp. "You smell like another woman."
Michael's eyes widened in panic. That couldn't be right. The only time he'd been close to Megan was when he helped her to the dining table. Could he have picked up her scent from that? It seemed unlikely.
"That's impossible." He looked at her, clearly hurt. "I didn't even touch a woman's hand today."
"Really?" Laura's voice was icy as she stared him down.
She hadn't actually smelled anything. She just wanted to see his reaction.
And she felt him stiffen under her hand.
"Maybe it's from the female secretaries who come to my office," Michael said, looking wounded. "Laura, you know I'm faithful, right?"
"Go take a shower," Laura forced a smile.
She couldn't stand to look at him anymore.
Sure, he was faithful, but to whom?
She had believed that Michael, at over thirty, had only been with her, thinking he was serious about relationships.
She used to think Lucas was bad.
But now, she felt that men like Lucas, though bad, were at least straightforward. Unlike Michael, who, despite being married to her, still thought about Megan.
Michael still had to play the role of a good husband and father.
So hypocritical.
How did Michael become like this?
She would rather he be his old self, harsh but honest.
"Alright, I'll go shower," Michael nodded obediently. "But honey, I really haven't wronged you. Since the day I confessed to you, I never thought about being with another woman."
Laura nodded.
Maybe he hadn't thought about it.
But who knows about the future.
While Michael was in the shower, Laura quickly took out the tracker from her bag and slipped it into the SIM card slot of his phone.
Luckily, the tracker was small and shouldn't be noticed for now.
Later that night, after Maeve fell asleep, Michael started getting handsy.
Whenever Laura thought about how he hadn't been home all evening, she felt repulsed.
If he had been with Megan, who knows if he had held her.
Laura wasn't a germaphobe, but the thought made her sick.
"I'm tired," she pushed him away.
"Honey, we haven't made love in two days," Michael hesitated, "I'm really uncomfortable."
"Deal with it yourself. You managed over thirty years without me, didn't you?" Laura turned her back to him.
Michael looked frustrated. It wasn't the same as before.
Once a man has experienced making love, it's unforgettable.
But he could tell Laura really wasn't into it. Maybe it was because he'd been coming home late these past few nights.
Honestly, he didn't want to either. Megan had a cold and a leg injury, and he was worried, so he went to check on her after work.
Then he saw her eating alone, looking all pitiful, so he stayed for dinner before heading back.
Forget it, he decided. He wouldn't go over for the next few days and would spend more time with Laura.
To make Laura happy, Michael started coming home right after work every day to hang out with her and Maeve.
Sometimes, when Laura checked the tracker, she wondered if she was just being paranoid.
After all, Michael's routine was pretty regular: home, work, and occasionally a meal with business partners.
On Sunday, the wedding planning company came to discuss their wedding arrangements.
The next day, news of their upcoming wedding was all over the trending lists, causing a buzz.
"Finally, they're getting married! Congratulations!"
"I heard the Jude Family is booking an entire island for the wedding. So happy and envious!"
"That's right. I heard they hired Nola, a world-renowned wedding dress designer. Her designs cost millions of dollars."
"Millions? I heard Michael bought a $300 million pink diamond to give to the bride on their wedding day."
"Michael is such a great guy, handsome and rich. Megan didn't know what she had."
Netizens were buzzing about it. Overall, Laura had become the focus of everyone.
At that moment, Laura, the center of attention, was on a movie date with Michael.
She occasionally checked her phone and saw that she was trending.
Seeing everyone envy her made her feel pretty anxious.
Their wedding plans couldn't be kept secret, but she hadn't expected the news to spread so soon. If the wedding didn't happen, it would be super embarrassing.
"Honey, do you want more popcorn? If you don't eat it soon, I'll finish it," Michael said, handing her the popcorn bucket.
Laura glanced at it; he had almost finished it.
Laura was speechless. He loved sweets so much.
"You have it. I'm on a diet," Laura waved her hand. Though she wanted to eat, she still wanted to lose about twenty pounds.
"Don't diet. You're already beautiful," Michael quickly flattered her.
"Not as beautiful as you," Laura said coldly.
Michael was speechless.
Just as Michael was about to speak, his phone rang. It was the nanny he had hired for Megan.
His eyes flashed, "It's too noisy here. I'll take the call outside."
He quickly walked out. When he answered, the nanny's hushed voice came through, "Michael, could you come over tonight? Miss Ray is very drunk."
Michael's face darkened, "Her leg isn't healed. How can she drink? Where did the alcohol come from? Why didn't you stop her?"
"The alcohol was delivered by courier. I wanted to stop her, but she seemed upset. She was crying in her room this afternoon and barely ate dinner. She told me not to tell you, but she's really drunk now."
