Chapter 1009 Her Eyes Were Red

Cassie's eyes went wide.

She'd recognize Joseph even if he turned to ashes.

'Is it him? He's not dead,' she thought.

Her mind went blank, and she couldn't look away when she saw Joseph staring back at her.

They were caught, separated by a crowd, just staring at each other.

Joseph noticed her red, swollen eyes and his lips curved into a slight smile.

Despite just surviving a life-and-death ordeal, he felt oddly good.

"Marigold!" Ophelia cried out, running over to hug her. "Thank goodness you're alive! You scared me to death. I thought you were inside."

"Marigold, what happened? The surveillance shows you entering the elevator." Ralph walked over, eyes red. He only had Marigold, and the thought of losing her nearly broke him.

"Dad, I almost died," Marigold said tearfully, hugging Ralph and Ophelia. "But Mr. Hernandez saved me."

She glanced shyly at Joseph.

"Dad, it was terrifying. The elevator fell more than ten floors. I pressed all the buttons, but it wouldn't stop. Luckily, Joseph opened the top of the box in time, and in the last two floors, he got us into the shaft. Then, he manually pried open the elevator door on the third floor, and we climbed out."

Marigold looked at Joseph with admiration. "We were just seconds away from dying. Joseph stayed calm. He could've escaped alone, but he saved me. In the shaft, he got his arm injured by the cable while holding onto me."

She reached out to grab Joseph's arm, but he dodged.

Joseph looked at Ralph indifferently. "If I survived and Marigold got hurt, I might become the enemy of the Dixon family. I just didn't want any trouble."

"Anyway, thank you for saving Marigold." Ralph nodded gratefully. He'd always known Joseph to be arrogant, but they'd never interacted. After this, he had newfound respect for him.

Joseph was right. If they both entered the elevator and Joseph survived while Marigold died, Ralph would have blamed him for not saving her.

Whether Joseph risked his life to save Marigold didn't matter to Ralph. What mattered was that as long as Joseph was alive, he had to save Marigold.

"Joseph, thank you. It's a good thing you were there tonight," Marigold said affectionately.

She'd never forget how, in that life-and-death moment, Joseph used his strong arms to pull her out of the elevator.

Later, when they were trapped in the shaft, he didn't say anything but held her tightly with his strong arms.

She could even feel Joseph's muscles and the pleasant male scent on him.

She'd heard his name so many times.

But after tonight, she realized Joseph wasn't as bad as the rumors said.

He was full of charm and made her feel safe. His perfect physique and breathtaking features made him the most handsome man she'd ever seen.

In her early twenties, Marigold experienced what it meant to have a crush.

Joseph glanced at her, frowning and pursing his lips, not even in the mood to speak.

"Since you're okay, that's good," Carl said, patting Joseph on the shoulder. "It's a good thing you were there tonight."

Otherwise, if Marigold had died at his Laura's party, it might have caused a rift between him and Ralph.

"Carl, something's off," Joseph said. "Elevators in any hotel are inspected regularly, especially in a seven-star hotel. Even if there's an accident, the emergency system should kick in. The elevator shouldn't just fall straight down; it should at least give people a chance to escape."

"I'll look into it," Carl said, his expression serious.

"Also, I suspect someone was targeting me," Joseph added. "Maybe Marigold got caught up because of me."

Everyone was stunned. If someone was targeting Joseph and caused this accident, the most suspicious people would be from the Chamberlain family and the March family.

After all, it was clear to everyone at the party that the Chamberlain family and the March family had set Joseph up.

Joseph was insignificant, so no one would point it out.

Ralph and Carl's faces turned grim. After a while, Carl said, "We'll thoroughly investigate this. Ms. Dixon said your arm was injured. Let the ambulance take you to the hospital."

"No need. I'm fine. I'll leave now," Joseph said coldly and turned to leave.

Cassie watched his back disappear until Violet came over and said, "Laura, since everything's fine, you and Cassie should go back and rest."

"Okay, Violet, was there really something wrong with the elevator?" Laura asked.

Violet frowned. "Most likely. Joseph was right; elevators don't malfunction that easily. You don't need to worry about this. If it was just targeting Joseph, that's one thing. If it was targeting someone else, it gets complicated."

Laura wasn't stupid and could tell that the powerful people might have offended someone. But she didn't want to get involved in that circle, so she quickly left with Cassie.

On the way, she asked, "Cassie, do you think Marigold might have a thing for Joseph?"

"Beats me," Cassie said. She could tell that Marigold's look at Joseph was unusual.

'Why didn't Joseph just die?'

Just as they reached the parking lot, Joseph, who had just left, was standing quietly under the dim light, hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on Cassie.

Cassie saw him, too.

She pursed her lips and, as if she hadn't seen him, pulled Laura straight to the parking spot.

Joseph's lips curved slightly, and he walked over, his tall figure blocking their way.

Wherever Laura and Cassie went, he followed.

Finally, Laura got annoyed first. "Joseph, what do you want?"

"I want Cassie," Joseph said, his lips curling up slightly.

Laura was stunned by his bluntness.

Cassie was furious, her face turning red, and she warned through gritted teeth, "Joseph, if you say one more word, I'll call the police and accuse you of sexual harassment."

Laura quickly nodded. "I can be a witness."

"Are you sure I can sexually harass you?" Joseph looked at Cassie meaningfully. "You know, I can't. I have a medical report to prove it."
