Chapter 127
"Joseph grunted in response, a hint of satisfaction easing the tightness in his chest.
""How are the preparations for the hotel trial coming along?""
""All set.""
Walter cursed inwardly. They had been secretly prepping for the case for ages, yet Joseph was still playing it cool. “Don't you realize, boss, that acting like this won't win her over?”
Meanwhile, Cassie, phone in hand, felt a chilling dread. She desperately wished for a do-over. Why hadn't she just toughed it out that day?
After all, being Hernandez's nanny had to be better than rotting in a jail cell.
""Okay, put this on and go make your plea,"" Laura Miller said abruptly, tossing a brand-new, white floral-patterned slip dress.
As Cassie unfolded it, her eyes widened at the deep V-neckline. ""You can't seriously expect me to go and seduce him in this during the dead of winter. He can't stand me. I'll just end up being despised even more.""
""If he's willing to share a bed with you, it means he's still got thoughts about you in that regard. Give it a shot; you've got nothing to lose,"" Laura retorted, not understanding why her best friend let Joseph Hernandez break her spirit like this. ""Here's the address to his law firm. I got it from Noah Collins.""
Cassie gripped the piece of paper with the address and took a deep breath. She had to try; after all, her fate was in her own hands.
But before leaving, she cooked Joseph's favorite dish, packed it into a takeout container, and drove to ZF Law Office.
It was her first time at his workplace. After explaining her presence to the receptionist, the receptionist made a call and then said, ""Mr. Joseph Hernandez is currently with a client. Please wait a moment.""
That moment turned into thirty long minutes.
Upstairs, Joseph Hernandez, who was playing pool with Noah Collins, found himself glancing at the clock on the wall every five minutes.
Noah was getting impatient. ""Just bring her up already.""
""No, this is a lesson for her,"" Joseph stated coolly, heading to the window to let in some chilly air from outside. His expression darkened, and he called out, ""Turn on the central heating in the lobby.”
“It’s quite a freeze downstairs; wouldn’t want anyone to catch a cold.”
Noah's lips twitched. ""Is that really necessary? It's quite warm on this floor. Cassie won't freeze.""
""I'm not worried about her. I'm concerned about our clients being cold,"" Joseph countered emotionlessly.
Noah thought to himself: Since when does Joseph care about the clients that much? Is he taking me for a fool?
---
Indeed, Cassie was shivering downstairs. It was her skimpy attire—a thin pair of tights—that made the chill unbearable. Thankfully, the central heating kicked in soon after.
After an entire hour, the receptionist finally gave her the go-ahead to see Joseph.
His office took up the entire floor. Joseph sat behind his desk in a navy blue shirt, a pair of gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, and a meticulously Windsor-knotted tie encircling his slender neck.
Joseph was hunched over his laptop, tapping away at the keys, his face a picture of focused intensity from her angle. Cassie didn't dare approach, her breathing as tentative as her steps.
Joseph Hernandez, frazzled and aimless in his typing, snapped his laptop shut after catching sight of her frozen stance. His voice was laced with impatience. ""How long are you going to just stand there? My time is precious. If you've got nothing for me, then leave me be.""
