Chapter 1127 You Make Me Sick
Joseph lost it and yanked Cassie into his arms.
"Joseph, what are you doing? Let go," Cassie protested, worried someone might see them.
"You know exactly what I'm doing. You flirted, now take responsibility," Joseph said with a raspy laugh, then kissed her.
Cassie melted into his embrace, feeling at ease.
After a while, Joseph murmured, "I prefer when it's just us for dinner. Too many people make it noisy."
On Seashore Avenue, Laura didn't drive since she came with Cassie. There were lots of cars, mostly private ones.
She pulled out her phone to call a ride.
Meanwhile, Benjamin was getting into his car at another nearby restaurant. As he was about to leave, he saw Laura.
Laura, in a blue denim jumpsuit with wavy hair, was looking at her phone. Even from the side, she looked stunning.
Benjamin's breath caught. The last time he saw her was months ago at the airport. Back then, Laura was with two kids. Later, he found out the kids were Cassie and Joseph's.
He also learned Laura was a top cosmetic formulator, with formulas worth millions.
She got engaged to Michael, but he left her for Megan.
Benjamin thought about getting her number to comfort her, but she quickly became Carl's Goddaughter.
Now, as the Goddaughter of the future president, she seemed out of reach.
But seeing her now, Benjamin couldn't resist driving over.
Laura didn't expect her ride so soon. She got in the back seat. "To Riverside Blossom, please. Thanks."
Benjamin gripped the wheel tighter. New to Whisperlyn City, he had to use navigation to find Riverside Blossom, which was only five or six kilometers away.
With the GPS on, he drove off.
Through the rearview mirror, Benjamin glanced at Laura.
She didn't recognize him. It had been three years since he was this close to her.
Benjamin thought she still smelled the same. If Isla hadn't been hurt back then, and if he had met Rose and Luke, they might have been married with kids by now.
But everything remained unknown.
Three minutes into the drive, Laura's phone rang. It was the ride-share driver. "Hello, miss. I'm here, but I don't see you."
"What?" Laura was shocked. "I just got into a white car. Isn't that you?"
"You must've gotten into the wrong car. I just arrived," the driver said, sounding a bit helpless.
"I'm so sorry," Laura quickly apologized. "I must've made a mistake."
"Alright."
After hanging up, Laura turned to the driver in front. "Sorry, I got into the wrong car. Did you also pick up the wrong person?"
"I didn't pick up the wrong person." A familiar voice replied, and Benjamin turned around, revealing his face.
Laura's mind went blank, feeling like she'd been doused with cold water. "Why is it you?"
"I was eating nearby and saw you when I came out," Benjamin explained, turning back to focus on driving. "I drove over, and you got in, thinking I was your ride-share."
Laura noticed the luxury car logo on the steering wheel and realized her mistake.
"Sorry, just drop me off by the roadside," Laura said flatly.
"It's okay. It's not far. I can get you there in ten minutes," Benjamin replied.
Staring at the back of his head, Laura insisted, "No, we don't know each other well. I don't need you to drive me."
"Laura," Benjamin's voice was hoarse and tinged with bitterness. "It's been years. Even if we broke up, we don't have to be enemies. We were schoolmates. Why act like this?"
Laura felt a pang of sadness, thinking, 'Did I do something wrong?'
To her, Benjamin was different from Michael.
Benjamin was someone she had loved, hated, and been disappointed by. Even though they had broken up and she no longer loved him, she couldn't be completely indifferent. A single word from him could overwhelm her, especially now, in her pregnant and unhappy state.
"Benjamin, I don't want to see you. You make me feel sick, so I don't want to be in your car. Do you understand?" Laura said bluntly.
If Isla hadn't tipped off Olivia about Laura going to Silverwood for a paternity test, Olivia wouldn't have suspected, and Nina wouldn't have been framed.
Over the past three years, she had been hating Isla and hating herself for loving Benjamin.
"Why?" Benjamin's arm trembled. "When I was with you, there was nothing between Isla and me. Laura, if you hadn't been so stubborn back then, we wouldn't be where we are today."
"So what if we are where we are today? I'm doing just fine," Laura said coldly.
"Laura, you're not someone who craves power and wealth. The Miller family gave you everything growing up. Everyone envies you for becoming the president's Goddaughter, but I don't think that's what you wanted. It was probably because Michael wanted to be with Megan, and the Jude family felt they owed you," Benjamin said, his words filled with regret.
Laura felt deeply embarrassed.
The polished facade she desperately maintained was ultimately torn apart by Benjamin, the very man who had once abandoned her. Was there anything more humiliating than that?
"Laura, you shouldn't have come to Whisperlyn City," Benjamin said, his tone full of bitterness.
