Chapter 119
"Laura felt a sinking feeling in her heart. The Andersons were one of Madison's most influential families, and they had indeed provoked their wrath this time.
""What do we do now then?""
""I've... called my uncle to help,"" Arthur said, his face displaying a mix of regret and helplessness. Though David was his romantic rival, for Cassie's sake, he had no choice but to seek his help.
""My uncle has connections; maybe he can find a way.""
""Oh, okay,"" Laura replied, recalling how Cassie had told her about David's interest in her. It seemed that in times of crisis, it was all about who you know.
The more she thought about it, the less she thought of Arthur, and she couldn't help but sneer, ""So, after being dumped by your fiancée, now you realize who's really got your back? Aren't you embarrassed by the mess Cassie's made for you?""
""I was blind before; that was my fault,"" he admitted.
Laura snorted, ""The conditions in the detention center are deplorable. Cassie's been traumatized ever since she was locked up in that old mansion. We have to get her out tonight.""
Arthur was taken aback. ""What happened with the old mansion? The Brooks family made sure she was well-fed and comfortable, right?""
""Are you kidding me? Have you not seen the medical reports circulating online? She was horribly abused in there; she nearly didn't make it,"" Laura retorted with a disdainful look, as if staring at someone utterly clueless.
She'd been locked up in there for three days—windows and doors all nailed shut, not a sliver of light. Her sustenance, if you could call it that, was nothing but moldy bread. No blankets, no clothes, no power, no water, completely cut off from the outside world. She nearly died in that darkness. Thank God... thank God we got to her in time. By the time we rushed her to the hospital, she was hanging on by a thread.""
Arthur Lewis shuddered, the tremor running through his tall frame.
He had sought out the Brooks family for their side of the story, but their account didn't match up at all.
Now, just thinking about Robert, Helen, and Olivia Brooks sent a shiver down his spine.
What kind of monster does it take to leave your own flesh and blood, your own sister, for dead? The thought was horrifying.
No wonder Cassie despised him so much. He had been a fool, blind to the reality. She must have felt so helpless.
Before long, David arrived, breathless and anxious.
""Uncle, you have to save Cassie,"" Arthur Lewis pleaded, his eyes red with desperation. ""She's innocent, and I owe her so much.""
""I'm not doing this for you. She's the woman I love, and I'll do everything in my power to help her,"" David said firmly.
With that determination, David and his lawyer went upstairs. About half an hour later, he returned, his expression gloomy.
""She can't be bailed out.""
""What? Not even by you?"" Laura Miller implored, despair gripping her. A thought struck her, ""What if I get the Collins family to intervene?""
She had Noah Collins' number, but with Cassie's recent fallout with Joseph Hernandez, it was uncertain whether Noah would be willing to help.
""It's no use. I've made inquiries, and the Anderson family is genuinely outraged this time. If the Collins family were to intervene, they would be directly opposing the Andersons. They wouldn't dare.""
David's headache was growing. He had considered every possibility on his way over.
""So, we just watch her get locked up and wait for a sentence? This isn't just a few years in jail—this could ruin her life,"" Laura Miller said, her voice filled with panic.
""Yes, Uncle, please think of something else,"" Arthur Lewis urged, his face ashen as he turned to David.
David's brow furrowed deeply. ""There's one person. But getting him to take the case is nearly impossible. He's a legend, undefeated, never found a case he couldn't win or a person he couldn't bail out.""
""Who is he?"" Laura Miller and Arthur Lewis asked in unison.
""Joseph Hernandez,"" David said, each word laden with gravity."
