Chapter 179

"Arthur continued, ""I've checked; half a billion is more than enough for one of his legal battles. Cassie, I can't stand to see you destroy yourself like this. I failed to protect you before—I let you down. From now on, I want to take good care of you.""
He'd been struggling these past days. Even though she might not be innocent anymore, he couldn't blame her. In the end, it was his own shortcomings.

Cassie's expression was a mix of emotions as she pushed the card back to him, ""I won't take your money.""

""Cassie..."" Arthur Lewis, desperate, ""Do you really want to stay with Joseph? You don't even like him. And did you see how he treated you that day? He doesn't respect you; you're just a toy to him.""

""Who said I don't like him?"" Cassie frowned, ""He was just angry that day.""

""You're defending him!""

Arthur Lewis recoiled, a touch of grief in his voice, ""Are you still angry with me? Don't seek revenge this way. Please, stop this. Break it off with him, and we can go back to how things were. I can start planning our wedding right now.""

""Arthur Lewis, what are you talking about? Have you lost your mind?!"" Kathleen suddenly burst in, snatched the card from Cassie's hand, and slapped Arthur Lewis across the face.

""Our family is in this state and you're giving her half a billion dollars. Are you crazy? That money is your chance for a comeback!""

""Mom..."" Arthur's face turned pale, ""I don't want to have any regrets. Cassie is the only one worth cherishing.""

""But she has no power or status now,"" Kathleen cried, ""Your father barely comes home, always with that woman. You have no stake in the company. How can I accept this? If you marry her, you'll never get another chance in your life!""

Arthur clenched his fists, his handsome face twisted in agony, ""I don't want to always fight for the Lewis Group with people I don't care for.""

""Come on, you didn't like Olivia Brooks back then, but eventually, you wanted to marry her, didn't you?"" Kathleen was frantic, ""If you dare to be with Cassie today, I'll throw myself at the gates!""

""Don't force me...""

The confrontation between mother and son at the gates drew more and more onlookers.
Cassie exhaled, her frustration palpable. ""Arthur Lewis, just do what your mom says. You know yourself; you'd regret being with me eventually.""

Arthur was flustered. ""Cassie, don't listen to my mom—""

""I stopped liking you a long time ago,"" she interrupted firmly.

""Think about it. After all the times you've hurt me, how could I still hold any affection for you? Joseph has been great; he's saved me more than once. He might seem aloof, but he's gentle in the little things, tender and caring. He's warm on the inside, and I really like him now.""

After she spoke, Cassie felt a sense of relief. The image of Joseph had deeply imprinted itself in her heart.

Arthur stared at her dumbfounded. She was the one who had always proclaimed she'd marry him, and he never imagined she'd confess to liking someone else. He couldn't accept it.

""No, you're lying to me!"" he exclaimed.

As he reached for her, Cassie swiftly dodged. ""Please stop disturbing my life. I'm living with Joseph now, and your behavior could cause misunderstandings.""

Without looking back, she walked away.

Arthur watched her retreating figure, shouting in anguish and kicking the wall in frustration.

""Come back with me,"" Kathleen urged. ""Grandpa has arranged a blind date for you with a young lady!""
