Chapter 140

"Ben was brought in shortly after.

Joseph's penetrating stare fixed on him. ""Who was the person involved with you in swapping out the faulty electrical wiring?""

Ben's gaze shifted to Alexander, and he identified him by pointing, ""Him.""

Alexander flailed for a response. ""You're lying! Did Cassie bribe you?""

Ben shifted awkwardly. ""The bribe didn't come from me; it was you. After the hotel fire, you transferred two million to my son overseas to frame Cassie.""

Alexander's face turned ashen, and Helen's expression was a mix of confusion and alarm.

Sam was livid. ""So, it was you who swapped the wiring. What's this? Trying to use Cassie as a scapegoat?""

Joseph's smile didn't quite reach his eyes. ""Mr. Brooks, the Brooks family has thrown their own daughter under the bus to protect your nephew; that's not misleading you, just prioritizing family, it seems.""

The courtroom erupted into chaos at the revelation.

""Could Robert have known about this?""

""Please, how could he not know? He's the CEO, for crying out loud!""

""My God, is Alexander his illegitimate son or something? To discard his own daughter but save his nephew?""

""I always heard that Robert and his wife didn't care for their daughter. Guess the rumors were true—that's just cruel.""

Robert and his wife, red-faced from the accusations, were on the defensive. Robert spoke up in a frantic tone. ""Mr. Hernandez, I would advise caution in your statements. My wife and I truly had no knowledge of this situation, nor were we aware that Ben had been bribed.""
Joseph Hernandez nodded, then slowly pulled out another bill. ""Perhaps you two truly are in the dark, but not long ago, Mr. Brooks received a set of decorations worth over two million dollars from Alexander.""

""Wow, so he must've taken the bribe from his nephew and then played dumb on purpose!""

""No kidding. You think a construction manager would dare to be so brazen without the silent approval of the chairman of Height Company?""

""Height Company is really despicable, yet they're a well-known architectural decor firm in the industry.""

""Forget about it. Let's make sure we never deal with that sham of a company again.""

""I hope Height Company goes under soon; what a trashy operation.""

In an instant, it wasn't just the courtroom that was in an uproar—online, waves of outrage were breaking as well. After all, this trial was being live-streamed, and the viewership was skyrocketing.

Robert felt like his world was collapsing. He never imagined that this lawyer would investigate even the decorations. This was a ruthless move.

Sensing trouble, Olivia Brooks hastily stood up. ""It's almost my dad's birthday. Those were just an early gift from Alexander. Is there something wrong with that? Mr. Hernandez, if you lack substantial proof, then what you're suggesting is slander.""

""Slander?"" Joseph Hernandez's voice held a hint of amusement as his piercing eyes locked onto hers. ""I don't recall ever explicitly saying that your family was involved.""

""Yeah, Mr. Hernandez didn't say anything, and yet they're the ones jumping out.""

""Sounds like a guilty conscience to me.""

""...""

Olivia Brooks stiffened, her radiant face turning pale as death.

This man was ruthless. With just a few words, he had driven them into a corner."
