Chapter 607
Joseph was an enigma, a man of such allure and intrigue that Megan found herself hopelessly captivated. Alas, her affections were unrequited; Joseph's heart remained elusive.
"Leaving so soon?" Joseph's gaze fell upon the bag clutched in Megan's hands.
"Yes, I'm meeting a friend. I need a breather," Megan replied, her voice a mere whisper as she lowered her gaze and brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. A hint of melancholy danced in her eyes.
A look of regret washed over Joseph's face. "I apologize, Megan. I had promised to accompany you to the hospital."
"It's alright." Megan's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, primarily focused on handling Rex. She nonchalantly accepted Joseph's apology and hastily exited the mansion, leaving it once again shrouded in silence.
Joseph found solace in a glass of red wine, draining it in one swift gulp. A chubby cat sauntered over, its meow breaking the silence. He bent down, affectionately rubbing the cat's head. "What if I just can't do it?" he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
Meanwhile, at the Leo Family mansion, Cassie's phone buzzed with an incoming call. She slid open the patio door and stepped out into the garden. The voice on the other end relayed, "Miss, Megan went to her secret private apartment, and Rex has followed suit. The surveillance cameras we installed at the hotel won't be of use."
Upon hearing this, Cassie felt a pang of regret. "I assumed Megan would head straight to the hotel to find Rex. She's more cautious than I anticipated."
"Don't worry, if they've met once, they'll meet again. We just need them to take the bait."
"That’s right. Keep an eye on her movements."
"Understood."
After ending the call, Leo emerged, his face etched with concern. " Cassie, I've received several calls from the shareholders at Leo's Group. They're insisting I return tomorrow. They've agreed to temporarily remove Atlas and Luna from their positions."
"Dad, you shouldn't return just yet. Let the stock prices of Leo's Group plummet," Cassie advised.
"Alright." Leo agreed without hesitation, causing Cassie to smile in surprise.
"Dad, are you sure? The plummeting stock prices could result in a loss of tens of billions."
"If the market value evaporates, so be it. Your happiness is my priority," Leo declared. His words were barely out when he swayed unsteadily.
Cassie quickly moved to support him. "Dad, are you alright?"
Leo chuckled bitterly. "I suppose age is catching up with me. Ever since the car accident, I haven't been the same. Even a short run leaves me breathless. That's why I wanted to hand over Leo's Group to Luna sooner. It's a pity."
Cassie's brow furrowed in concern. "Dad, let's get you a full-body check-up at the hospital tomorrow."
"There's no need, I have one annually."
"You must listen to me. I won't be at ease otherwise," Cassie insisted.
Leo looked at Cassie, his eyes welling up with unshed tears. " Cassie, I've let you and your mother down. I am nothing but a burden."
"Dad, I won't lie. There were times when I resented you. But I can't help it, I am your daughter," Cassie admitted with a sigh.
Leo was filled with remorse. His relentless pursuit of success in the business world had blinded him to the needs of those closest to him. He knew he had to make amends with Cassie, his precious daughter. She couldn't be made to suffer any longer.
The following day, Cassie accompanied Leo to a renowned hospital in New York for a comprehensive check-up.
After a morning of rigorous tests, the results were finally ready.
The doctor's brow furrowed as he scanned the reports. "Leo, there are toxins present in your blood."
"What?" Leo exclaimed, taken aback. "But my check-up three months ago showed no such thing."
The doctor shook his head. "These are chronic toxins, accumulated over at least two years. Have you been experiencing coughing, headaches, or chest tightness?"
"Yes," Leo nodded hurriedly. "I consulted a doctor previously, and they attributed it to the aftereffects of my car accident and advancing age."
