Chapter 195
"She could have cried from frustration; she no longer wanted to face anyone.
Flustered, Cassie found Joseph burying his face in her hair, ""Let's go home.""
Whining playfully, she said, ""We're finally out having fun, and I have so much to tell you.""
She didn't hold back, sharing all the news she'd gathered from Mrs. Parker.
Joseph instantly connected the dots, ""So, my 'accident' at the construction site wasn't an accident at all. It was the work of the Brooks, huh? They had the nerve to try and deceive me.""
The person responsible for his last injury was no longer part of this world, and yet the Brooks dared to cross him.
He fished out his phone, scrolling for Walter's number.
""What are you doing?"" Cassie asked.
""I'm going to take down the Brooks.""
His boastful arrogance made Cassie quickly cover his phone, ""Don't be rash. The Brooks are tangled up with the Jones now, making them untouchable, and they're even challenging the preeminence of the Collins family in Madison.""
Joseph: ""...""
Was there anyone he couldn't touch? The thought almost made him laugh.
""Don't worry. I'll avenge you,"" he reassured her with conviction.
Cassie, earnest and solemn, comforted him, ""I plan to join the Peace Group and vie for the chairperson's seat. I'll leave the Brooks with nothing and personally ensure that those who harmed my grandmother end up behind bars.""
Joseph looked her over, skepticism clear in his eyes.
Coughing awkwardly, Cassie insisted, ""You have to believe in me. I'll make it work. Peace Group was my mother's legacy; I have to win it back. And then... even if you don't want to fight your battles, I could support you.""
""Hmm, alright. I look forward to being taken care of by you.""
Joseph's eyes twinkled with an intriguing smile. Interesting. If that's how she wanted to play it, he'd step back and see just how far she could grow. After all, marrying him meant dealing with the Hernandez clan sooner or later...
They played until eleven o'clock at night.
Laura Miller checked her phone while they hung out, disheartened that there was no call from Benjamin.
Feeling down, she drank more than usual.
Cassie ended up drinking too much as well, her cheeks flushed with inebriation.
On their way home, driven by Joseph, Laura suddenly burst into tears and began cursing a sleazebag, prompting Cassie to join in. The ruckus made Joseph edgy, so he sped up and dropped Laura off at the entrance of her apartment complex.
""Thanks, really,"" Laura said, opening the car door with trembling legs and bending in a tipsy bow, ""look after our Cassie for me, will you?""
