Chapter 592
Three years had passed.
In Austin, a woman stood before a mirror, the bandages that had obscured her face for so long being gradually peeled away. What was revealed beneath was a visage of delicate features and breathtaking beauty. She traced her fingers gently over her smooth, fair skin, the glow of which was a testament to years of healing.
She claimed she was merely eighteen now.
"Wow, Mommy, you're really beautiful," a little girl exclaimed, bounding into her lap with a joyful expression.
"Of course, can't you see whose beautiful genes I inherited?" A little boy behind her wore a satisfied grin. "Not just anyone can give birth to someone as handsome as me."
A sigh escaped the woman's lips. It was hard to believe that someone as youthful and beautiful as her already had two articulate children.
"But I don't look like Mommy at all, I must look like that stinky bad guy Daddy," the girl lamented, her face twisted in distress.
The woman, Cassie, mirrored her daughter's worried expression. The saying went that daughters took after their fathers and sons their mothers. In the case of her twins, Sophia and Oliver, it seemed to hold true. Despite their shared birth, they bore little resemblance to each other.
"That's right, you do look like that stinky bad guy your Daddy, but our Sophia is much cuter," Laura, their companion, stooped down to pat Sophia's head.
"Laura," Cassie turned to her, "I'm planning on going back to the country, what about you?"
"In a few days, I still have one project in hand," Laura responded, her gaze downcast.
Cassie looked at Laura, a tinge of pain in her eyes. "It's okay, all those things are in the past, this time I will take care of it personally."
"No need, I will personally deal with Nathan," Laura suddenly raised her head, her voice firm. "I'm not as fragile as you imagine."
"That's good," Cassie concealed the complexity in her eyes. "This time when I go back, I can't bring these two little ones with me, they will be temporarily entrusted to you."
"Don't worry. We’re best friends. Not to mention, they are my goddaughter and godson," Laura smiled, patting Cassie's shoulder reassuringly.
"Mommy, can I go back with you?" Oliver raised his head, his eyes earnest. "I can help you."
"Good boy, Mommy knows you're capable, but Sophia needs you to take care of her," Cassie touched Oliver's head gently. "And if the Hernandez family's people find you, they will take you away."
"Yes, your mom had to put in a lot of effort to keep you safe," Laura interjected seriously. "The most important thing is that your dad is about to marry a wicked stepmother, that woman is more malicious than Snow White's stepmother. If Joseph finds out about you, he will give you to that wicked stepmother to take care of."
Sophia, terrified by the prospect, immediately clung to Laura's leg. "Then I won't go back, I don't want a stepmother."
Oliver furrowed his brow in frustration. "Fine, I'll reluctantly stay for a while, but you need to come get us as soon as possible."
"Okay," Cassie responded, her smile bittersweet. She was reluctant to leave her children, but she knew she had to return.
