Chapter 1323 What is Bernice's True Identity?
Laura let out a heavy sigh, "The only way now is to take out David. He's the money machine behind all this."
Cassie stayed quiet, thinking, 'No one wants David gone more than I do. But the real kicker is Isabella's been backing him up the whole time. Seriously, how did I end up with a mom like that?'
"What’s the plan?" Cassie asked, her worry growing. "Ralph's gonna flip on us any day now."
"Yeah, and Ralph's birthday is in two days. Michael said he's probably gonna make his move then." Laura's face was all serious, "The Jude family is scrambling to get ready. If we mess this up, David and Ralph will gobble up the Jude Group."
Cassie felt a chill. If David took over the Jude Group, her kids and Aiden would be in real danger. No one would be able to protect them.
"Cassie, if you get a chance, just run," Laura said, gripping her hand tight.
"What about you?" Cassie bit her lip. Laura was her best friend.
Laura looked a bit lost, but then she saw the worry in Cassie's eyes and said, "Don't sweat it. The Jude family won't go down that easy. Plus, the president's elected by everyone. Ralph can't just kill us off. Worst case, he puts us under house arrest. The real threat is the election in four years; he might try to off us to become president."
Cassie was taken aback, and after thinking it over, she realized Ralph might actually be plotting that.
She thought, 'If he openly killed the president and took over, people would lose their minds. Ralph doesn't have the guts for that.'
"Forget it. Talking about this is pointless. I wanna escape too, but I can't right now." Cassie shrugged, giving a bitter smile.
Laura was just as anxious. Cassie's situation was way more dangerous than hers.
But she couldn't do anything to help.
After leaving Laura's place, Cassie headed back to the Chapman family.
"Mommy, how's Grandpa? When can we see him?"
Sophia and Oliver ran up and hugged her legs.
Cassie squatted down, looking at her kids, her heart aching. She felt so useless, having brought them into the world but unable to protect them.
"Mommy, what's wrong?" Oliver looked up at her, worried. "Did Joseph mess with you?"
"No." Cassie hugged them tight, silently vowing to protect them no matter what.
Just then, her phone rang. Seeing "Bernice" on the screen, she was a bit surprised.
Since Bernice got hurt by her dad last time, she hadn't been around much. Word was she went back to her hometown to recover. Cassie didn't know Bernice that well. Why was she calling now?
After a moment's hesitation, Cassie answered, "Bernice, you feeling better?"
"Yeah, almost. I got back to Whisperlyn City yesterday." Bernice's voice was soft over the phone.
Normally, Cassie would have invited her out for a meal. But with everything going on, she just wasn't in the mood. "Bernice, I'm sorry. I've got a lot on my plate right now."
"Need a hand?" Bernice cut her off, "Looks like things are getting wild in Whisperlyn City. I heard David's got some serious clout now."
Cassie was floored, totally taken aback.
She always thought Bernice was just some regular actress. How did she know all this?
"Thanks, but there's nothing you can do." She turned her down, feeling bitter. Even Lucas was struggling to find a way out, let alone Bernice.
"I've got a friend who can get you and your family out of the country, no visas or passports needed," Bernice said softly.
Cassie was shocked and excited, "For real?"
"Yeah," Bernice replied, "Sometimes it's best to just get out of dodge."
"Bernice, how do you know these people and all this stuff? Who are you really?" Cassie was super curious. They weren't that close, only having had a meal together once.
There was a pause on the other end, then Bernice said, "Just know I'm not someone who'd hurt you."
"Okay, I trust you."
Cassie didn't hesitate. She had no other options.
"Alright, now listen up. Ralph's birthday is in two days. A car will pick you up that night."
"Why wait two days?" Cassie was anxious. Laura had said Ralph's birthday might be when everything goes down.
Bernice sighed, "Haven't you noticed David's got people watching you and your family?"
Cassie's face fell. She had thought about it but hadn't seen anyone suspicious. "He didn't follow you because he knew you'd be careful. But he's got eyes on the Chapman family, even your kids, probably worried you'd try to hide with them."
Bernice continued, "On Ralph's birthday, they'll be busy. Even if his people aren't fully deployed, they'll be less focused on you. That's your chance to split." Cassie was blown away. Who was Bernice to know all this?
"Okay, I'll follow your lead, but I need to take my kids and my dad. His legs aren't great."
"No problem. Someone will escort you all the way out. Don't tell anyone about this."
After the call ended, Cassie couldn't calm down. First, she was stunned by Bernice's connections. Second, she was thrilled she could get her family out safely. She looked at her kids but knew she couldn't tell them yet. Especially Sophia, who couldn't keep a secret.
She only mentioned it to Aiden when she visited the hospital, "Dad, forget about the company for now. With David's pressure, there's nothing you can do anyway."
"Yeah, I get it," Aiden said, looking defeated.
"Dad, you can start fresh abroad. Staying alive is what matters. Do you want David to use you and the kids to get to me?" Cassie hated being threatened.
"Alright, I can't help you, but I won't drag you down either." Aiden nodded, "I'll get discharged this afternoon." Cassie nodded and helped him with the paperwork that day.
