Chapter 1194 I Am Not a Kind Person
Bernice chuckled.
Lucas didn't think it was a happy laugh. "What's so funny?"
Bernice smirked. "You're chasing a mistress so openly. Should I applaud your shamelessness?"
Lucas's face darkened. "Bernice, I just helped you, and now you're insulting me. How many times have you done this already?"
No woman had ever dared to insult Lucas repeatedly and get away with it.
"I'm not insulting you. Just stating facts." Bernice shrugged. "If that's an insult, not my problem."
"Bernice, you think I won't do anything?" Lucas grabbed her wrist, making her wince in pain.
Seeing her pained but stoic expression, Lucas's heart tightened, and he let go.
After a moment, Bernice said, "Is this how a chief physician acts? Can I get a different doctor?"
"Do you know how many people beg for my treatment?" Lucas said. "No matter what, Bernice, you owe me this time."
Bernice twirled a strand of hair. "Actually, I wouldn't have owed you. You came to me. Without you, I could've called the hospital, and there'd still be doctors in the ER. Because of you, Fiona had to cover for you with the police."
Lucas was furious. He had brought her to the hospital and saved her, only to be told he was unnecessary.
"Bernice, you're asking for trouble. Do you think I won't expose how you schemed against your dad? When your image collapses, advertisers and production teams will demand compensation, and Dreamscape Entertainment will drop you. You'll be finished."
Bernice looked at him. "So what do you want? To threaten me into sleeping with you, being your woman, and becoming a mistress?"
Lucas's lips twitched. It sounded shameless, but he was genuinely interested in Bernice. Yet, her cold eyes made it hard to say.
He felt irritated.
Suddenly, there was a knock. Cassie and Laura walked in with flowers. "Bernice, I heard you got hurt."
Laura was stunned when she saw Lucas.
Cassie was also surprised. "Mr. Nelson, what are you doing here?"
"I'm her doctor," Lucas said flatly.
Cassie was puzzled. "But don't you usually handle oncology patients?"
"We're short-staffed, so I was reassigned." Lucas glanced at Bernice. "I'll check on you later."
With that, Lucas left.
Laura gave him a strange look, then turned to Bernice and blurted out, "Bernice, Mr. Nelson must have a crush on you."
"What?" Bernice smiled faintly. "Stop talking nonsense."
Cassie frowned and placed the supplements she brought on the bedside table, reminding her, "Lucas could be a good friend, but as a husband or boyfriend, anyone who falls for him is unlucky. He's not the type to settle down."
Laura said, "Didn't he decide to marry Sarah?"
"Do you think Sarah can control him?" Cassie raised an eyebrow.
"Don't worry. I never intended to be with him." Bernice gave a weak smile. "He's only interested in me for now. Once he gets what he wants, that's it. Besides, I don't like him at all."
"I believe you're rational. Lucas was targeting you during our meals before. I didn't get it then, but now I do. He's just mad because he can't have you," Laura said with a smile.
Bernice changed the subject. "I didn't expect you to visit me."
"We're friends," Laura interrupted. "I felt a connection with you from the start. Lucas said bad things about you, but making friends is about personal interaction. I know best if you're worth befriending."
"Thank you," Bernice said softly.
If anyone could evoke a sense of closeness for Bernice, it was Laura and Cassie. They were also her friends from the past.
"If you need anything, ask us," Cassie added. "Joseph is a top lawyer, and he has a friend with a powerful law firm. If this goes to court, come to me."
"Okay," Bernice added, "Actually, I intentionally hurt myself. Hunter kept threatening me, so I came up with this plan."
She finished with a helpless smile. "I don't want to lie to you. I'm not a kind person."
Cassie and Laura were stunned but only for a moment. Their eyes then showed admiration. Laura laughed. "That's perfect. Cassie and I hate women who pretend to be kind. Women need to be a bit ruthless."
"But next time, don't use such tactics. Ask us for help," Cassie said.
"Thank you," Bernice said, looking up with a genuine, warm smile.
In this second chance at life, it was the only moment she felt a bit of warmth.
Cassie and Laura stayed for about an hour before getting up to leave.
As they closed the door, Cassie saw Lucas walking over.
Laura muttered, "Doesn't he have anything better to do?"
Cassie frowned and walked up to him. "Mr. Nelson, it's almost dark. Haven't you taken a break?"
"Bernice needs an IV," Lucas said calmly.
"You're the top doctor here. She doesn't need your attention for a minor injury," Cassie joked.
