Chapter 315
""Enough, I don't need to know. Whether she's dead or alive, it's no concern of mine.""
Joseph revved up the car and sped off like a rocket. Walter, frightened, clutched the overhead handle tightly.
Arriving at the office, Joseph went straight upstairs.
Walter poured him a cup of coffee and was about to leave when Joseph suddenly called him, ""Hold on. What did you find out?""
...
Men can be so fickle.
Walter turned back and reported seriously, ""The car was tampered with at Leo's Diner. It was the gardener; he took money from Xavier, the big shot from Flourishville. I know Xavier and Clark are close, but even if we were to investigate, Clark wouldn't get a smear on him.""
""That's expected. Clark might do some despicable things, but in this case, he's quite experienced,"" Joseph said as he picked up the coffee and blew on it. ""How's Leo doing with the investigation?""
""He's looking into the car, but it's been torched, and there were no cameras at the scene, so I doubt he'll find much,"" Walter said. ""He probably wouldn't expect Jayden's family to be so vicious.""
""Leo is a righteous man, but unfortunately, such people are easily fooled,"" Joseph sneered.
""Joseph, do you want me to tell Ginger the investigation results?""
""Why would you tell her?"" Joseph abruptly slammed his coffee on the table. ""She doesn't sign your paychecks. A foolish woman like that deserves what she gets.""
""Get out!"" Joseph lost his temper.
Walter was accustomed to his temper and kept an ear out for information. Sure enough, that evening, there was new intel.
""Joseph, a word from Leo's Diner is that they've found the person who messed with the car. The place is locked down now; they've even cut off their internet connection.""
Joseph raised an eyebrow. ""You said Leo wouldn't find anything, didn't you?""
""Yeah,"" Walter admitted, equally confounded.
Joseph pondered for a moment, and then it clicked.
It was a ruse, all right. Leo would never suspect his family—it was likely a scheme hatched by Cassie.
That girl was crafty; no wonder she wrapped him around her finger.
He took a drag of his cigarette, torn over what to do. He loathed her, yet now he found himself itching to see, kiss, and have her soothe his restlessness.

On Cassie's second day in the hospital, David was feeding her lunch when Liam visited. Liam, clad in a beige trench coat with the hem of his grey trousers rolled up to reveal refined ankles, boasted the looks that could eclipse any leading man in Hollywood.
""Liam, what brings you here?"" Cassie was startled. She had met him only once at a Hernandez family gathering and hadn't even exchanged a sentence with him, but he was indeed her rescuer from the car accident.
""You're the one I saved; I’m just checking in,"" Liam said, eyeing David.
David stood and said, ""Hello, I'm Cassie's fiancé. We're very grateful to you, Liam, for saving her that night.""
His demeanor was gentle, the very image of a humble gentleman, poised and dignified."
