Chapter 995 Joseph, We're Not That Close
At this moment, Michael desperately needed someone to comfort him, so he called Megan. "Megan, I don't have to marry Laura anymore, but I've been kicked out of the Jude family. You don't mind, do you?"
"Why would I mind? You've done so much for me. I'm really touched," Megan suppressed the urge to curse him and asked softly. "I knew your family didn't like me."
"Megan, stop it. I've already made my decision. Laura's child has nothing to do with me anymore," Michael interrupted her irritably.
Mentioning Laura made Megan enraged. "By the way, how did Carl end up making her his Goddaughter?"
The future president's daughter, even if not by blood, that status was enough to walk around Madison with her head held high.
Laura could marry even better in the future.
"It must be my family's way of making up for her," Michael said gloomily. "Forget it. Laura is too scheming. She got what she wanted."
Megan really wanted to curse out loud, 'Forget it? Can you really just forget it?'
She was now incredibly envious of Laura.
She said to herself inwardly, 'Why did she get to be the future president's daughter? I wanted that, too, even if it meant not having Michael. Now Michael was back to me, but without the support of the Jude family, no matter how well the Ocean Blue group did, he was just an ordinary person. Moreover, with the Jude family cutting ties with him, Michael's future in the business world would be much harder, and no one would take him seriously. He is practically poorer than I am now.'
"Michael, I know you're feeling down. Get some rest, or maybe apologize to the Jude family. You are still Michael Jude." Then Megan hung up the phone.
Michael was stunned. He actually wanted to talk more to ease his pain.
He thought for a moment and then called Lucas, "Lucas, I'm feeling down. Let's have a drink tonight."
"No, I'm not going," Lucas refused flatly.
"Aren't you my friend?" He was angry.
"Don't make me angry!" Lucas scolded him mercilessly. "Michael, I can't believe you are such a fool. You forced Laura to have an abortion and even pushed her down the stairs. What were you thinking?"
"I just wanted to justify Megan. I can't have an illegitimate child. Megan and I will have children in the future," he defended himself.
"Well, I wish you luck with that. Just a reminder, you better be polite to Laura from now on. She's the future president's Goddaughter." Lucas ended the call with a cold laugh.
Michael's face was full of embarrassment and sorrow. He had followed his own resolve, but why did it feel like everyone had turned against him?
In the evening, Cassie brought in some food, and Laura looked at her apologetically. "Cassie, I'm sorry to trouble you to take care of me. Why don't you go back? I can have Diane come instead."
"Forget it. I am your friend, and I should be staying with you now. Besides, when I was pregnant in Austin, didn't you take good care of me?" Cassie could tell Laura wasn't very happy.
Cassie understood that having a child without a father took a lot of courage for any woman.
"Yeah, back in Austin, it was nice hanging out with Sophia and Oliver. Kids are actually quite cute." Laura suddenly felt relieved. "There are too many jerks. It's better to have a child and just date without getting married."
"You have many options in life, especially now that you're Madison's princess. The men pursuing you will be of higher quality," Cassie remarked.
"True." Laura laughed. "Maybe years from now, at a grand banquet, I'll walk in wearing a luxurious gown and see Michael and Benjamin standing humbly on the side. Then I'll wave my hand and say, 'Take these two scumbags out. They don't deserve to be here.'"
Cassie was relieved to see Laura finally smiling.
After dinner, she called David, "Sorry, I can't move in tonight. I didn't expect Laura to go through this."
"It's okay. She's your friend. It's good for you to stay with her," David said gently. "Which room are you in? I'll come by later."
"No need. Too many people from the Jude family came here today. Laura is exhausted. She needs to take a rest." Cassie explained.
"Alright, I'll come by tomorrow then," David paused and suddenly asked. "Is Carl really going to make Laura his Goddaughter?"
"Of course, Carl has already issued a statement. Once Laura recovers, the Jude family will hold a recognition banquet," Cassie replied.
David said meaningfully, "Laura gets good out of misfortune. Being the president's Goddaughter is no small thing."
"Not really. Laura never cared about these things," Cassie said, frowning.
As she didn't think Laura got good out of misfortune, she wondered why David said those words.
"It was a slip of the tongue. You rest," David explained.
Cassie hadn't been back in the room long when there was a knock on the door.
She turned to see Joseph walking in under the cool, pale light. He wore a white shirt and black trousers, looking handsome and dignified.
"What are you doing here?" Cassie frowned instinctively.
Laura glanced at him, too. "Joseph, we're not that close."
"I heard from Lucas that your friend was in hospital, and you were taking care of her, so I came here." Joseph placed the items he had brought on the table. "This is freshly made chicken soup."
"I don't care." Laura snapped.
"And some crawfish bought for you." Joseph suddenly looked at Cassie, his deep eyes seemingly able to drown someone.
Laura's throat caught. She thought, 'Crawfish, my favorite, but could I eat it now?'
Cassie's eyebrows twitched subtly. "Thanks, but I can buy it myself. Besides, Laura can't eat this. You're just tempting her."
"You used to love it." Joseph, who was rejected by Cassie, lowered his long eyelashes. His face, as if meticulously sculpted by God, looked so forlorn that any woman would feel a deep sense of pity.
Even Cassie felt a moment of guilt as if she had hurt him. But soon, she said indifferently, "That was before. I used to love you, too, but now I don't."
Laura gasped, thinking, 'Cassie, you are so harsh to Joseph.' As she saw Joseph's noble, handsome face turn pale with hurt, she wanted to applaud.
