Chapter 157

"The following morning arrived clear and bright.

Cassie got up promptly as usual. Joseph Hernandez had been awake already and frowned upon seeing her, ""Where are you going?""

""To make breakfast.""

His frown deepened. How could she be in the mood to make breakfast after her grandmother's passing?

""Forget it, we'll have the staff handle breakfast today,"" he said, holding onto her arm.

""I can't skip it. It's my responsibility to make your breakfast,"" Cassie replied, with a deference resembling that of a servant.
Joseph Hernandez sat up restlessly, a sudden frustration evident in his demeanor, ""Let's skip breakfast. Change your clothes. I'm taking you somewhere.""

Cassie frowned. She hadn't been grounded, and had planned to go to work today. However, it seemed her life was currently at his beck and call, ""Okay.""

After getting ready, Joseph drove them out of town. Cassie had no idea where they were headed, and honestly, she didn't care to ask. Conversing with him was the last thing she wanted to do right now.

Only when they arrived at a cemetery did she recognize the place. Wasn't this where her grandmother was laid to rest?

""Why are we here?"" she questioned, a mix of confusion and irritation in her voice.

""To pay respects,"" Joseph said as he stepped out of the car, noticing she remained seated, motionless.

""I've already paid my respects. You don't need to. This is none of your business,"" said Cassie, trying to avoid reopening old wounds.

Joseph's displeasure was palpable as he retorted icily, ""Arthur Lewis can pay his respects, and I can't? What are you implying? Do I need to remind you that technically, I'm still your husband?""

""You've never treated me like a wife,"" Cassie mumbled under her breath, pouting, ""You're the one who said you didn't want to meet my relatives.""

""I never said I wouldn't honor them after they passed,"" he replied firmly, lifting her out of the car.

Joseph's voice softened, ""Trust me, your grandma is in a better place now.""

""Yeah,"" Cassie nodded involuntarily, feeling a slight alleviation in the heaviness she'd been carrying around. Her grandmother had always missed her grandfather, and now, maybe, she was happily reunited with him and Cassie's aunt."
