Chapter 560
Joseph had changed. He was no longer the man he once was. With his newfound authority over the Hernandez family, he had the power to defy the wishes of the two elders, should he choose to do so.
Grandma, visibly flustered, voiced her confusion. "What exactly is happening between you two? We noticed a certain chilliness in your interactions, but we assumed it was a temporary discord that would resolve itself with time."
Cassie felt a cold knot forming in her chest. She was at a loss. Was it possible that her recent silence had driven Joseph away? Had he grown weary of her and sought solace in Megan's company? The thought of Joseph's heartlessness was more than she could bear.
"Don't worry, we will speak with Joseph. Your only concern should be taking care of yourself and the child," Walter offered, his voice uncharacteristically gentle.
Cassie closed her eyes, choosing to remain silent. It wasn't until the room fell quiet once more that Rosalind approached, carrying a bowl of soup. " Cassie, you must eat something. Even if you're not hungry, the children inside you needs nourishment."
"Rosalind, I can't bear the thought of Megan as their stepmother. It doesn't sit right with me," Cassie confessed in a murmur.
" Cassie, don't cry. I'm certain Joseph still harbors feelings for you. Just this afternoon, before Megan's arrival, he was searching for you everywhere. His words may have been harsh, but his actions suggested a desire for reconciliation. He's been home every night recently. Last night, he even lingered outside your door," Rosalind mused.
"Perhaps you've been distant for too long, and Joseph is attempting to provoke a reaction from you," Rosalind speculated.
"He wouldn't resort to such drastic measures to provoke me unless his feelings have truly altered," Cassie countered, her smile tinged with bitterness. "No, it's not a change of heart. He has always loved Megan."
"That's not true. Joseph truly loves you," Rosalind insisted, struggling to find the right words to defend Joseph. "It's baffling how abruptly Joseph has changed."
Cassie was taken aback. "Rosalind, are you certain Joseph was looking for me before Megan arrived?"
"Yes, he even mentioned that it was your idea to bring Megan to the estate for treatment, but you were nowhere to be found. Joseph blamed you for not being there with him."
Cassie was stunned. Joseph's heartlessness was becoming increasingly apparent. She recalled that not long after Megan had encountered Nina's mother, the woman had passed away. Could Megan be involved in this sudden shift as well? Cassie furrowed her brow, uncertainty gnawing at her.
She spent the entire night in bed, sleep eluding her. The following day, when her condition had slightly improved, she rose to seek out Joseph. She discovered that he hadn't returned home all night, and her heart sank.
Joseph and Megan had left together the previous day. Had they spent the entire night together? Had something transpired between them?
