Chapter 311
"Leo was no fool; understanding dawned, and he glared furiously at Vera.
Vera jumped in fright. ""Cassie, what on earth do you mean? I heard with my ears from the Hernandez family's maid that you sneaked into the pool. I thought you were trying to seduce Richard. Richard is no good; I rushed over there because I was worried about you...""
""Yeah, rushed over. If you had found me with my clothes in disarray and Richard on top of me, my reputation would have been ruined. The Hernandez folks would sure as hell think less of me, and why would they agree to Richard marrying me then?""
Cassie sighed deeply. ""Aunt Vera, if you cared about me, you should have come alone. You shouldn’t have brought the whole Hernandez entourage. If you didn't find me, you should have been relieved, not making a scene for everyone to know.""
Each of her sentences was clear and logical. Even a fool like Leo would have to see that Vera was undoubtedly involved now.
""Vera, you're just cruel,"" Leo said, shaking angrily. ""She's just a girl; what has she done to you? Picking on her at home is one thing, but at the Hernandez’s? You're practically trying to destroy her.""
Cassie frowned. ""Dad, didn't you notice how the chef deliberately targeted me at dinner?""
""Oh, I almost forgot,"" Leo recalled, his dislike for Vera reaching its peak. ""Didn't you tell me you and Celeste were close? I kept seeing you two together all day.""
""Dad, don't let her drive a wedge between us,"" a worried Luna interjected.
""Shut up,"" Leo snapped at her. ""Look what your mother has turned you into. You're both venomous.""
Luna stood stunned as Vera also grew furious. ""Leo, you've favored her ever since she came back. I bet you're still hung up on that tramp, Isabella.""
Before she could finish, Leo's hand struck her face. ""Vera, you made a mistake, and you still refuse to repent. The biggest regret of my life is marrying you.""
""Leo, how dare you hit me?"" Vera covered her face, disbelief etched across it as tears fell. ""Luna, let's go. We're going to your grandmother's.""
Crying, she grabbed Luna’s hand and headed for the door.
""Dad, you're so biased. Ever since Cassie arrived, you've stopped caring about me,"" Luna sobbed, following Vera out.
Leo's face turned pale as he sat down on the couch. Cassie spoke softly, ""Dad, I'm sorry. I didn't want to bring it up, but tonight they...""
""It's not your fault. I failed to protect you,"" Leo said with a pained expression as if a bitter memory had resurfaced. He seemed determined as he added, ""I'll find a way to divorce her.""
Cassie was taken aback, her silence speaking volumes. The business entanglements between the Chapmans and the Bradleys were notoriously complex. She doubted anyone in the Chapman family would support such a move.
------------
Vera returned to the Bradley estate, accompanied by Luna. Upon seeing the bruise on Vera's face, Clark, her younger brother, was enraged. ""Sis, let me take care of this girl Cassie. That property has been a thorn in my side for too long anyway.""
Comforted by his words, Vera felt at ease knowing her brother was a tough cookie, well-connected with some heavy hitters. Taking out Cassie would be a breeze.
------------
In Vera's absence, Cassie found peace. After breakfast, she drove to the office along the winding mountain roads. Then, as she approached a sharp bend and hit the brakes, they failed. Someone had tampered with her car!"
