Chapter 1744 The More Lucas Hates Her, The Better
Bernice was shaking with anger. After what felt like forever, she finally spat out, "Fine, let me buy shares in Dreamscape Entertainment Group, and I won't hold this against you."
"Hold it against me?" Lucas squinted and smirked. "You think you have any leverage over me? And buying shares in Dreamscape? Forget it."
He turned and walked out, clearly done with her.
Bernice grabbed a notebook from his desk and hurled it to the floor.
Lucas spun around and slapped her hard across the face.
"Pick it up," he ordered coldly.
Bernice looked up, tears streaming down her face, smudging her cheap mascara. "What if I don't?"
Lucas, already on edge, snapped. "Have you forgotten why you came to me? If you don't pick it up, don't even think about money or a house. With one word from me, you'll get no good gigs. You'll never be able to face Sarah again. And as for sleeping with you, I can do that for free for the rest of your life."
Bernice stared at him, stunned by his cruelty.
"Your face is a mess. Don't look at me like that; it makes me sick. Pick it up and get out."
Lucas threw those words at her and walked away.
Bernice took a deep breath. Luckily, she had long been disgusted with Lucas. If she had liked him, her heart would have been shattered.
She sneered, bent down, picked up the notebook, and put it back on the desk.
After all, this was the effect she wanted.
The more Lucas hated her, the better.
But the pain on her face was real.
With her face injured, Bernice had to take the afternoon off.
For the next few days, she attended an event out of town and spent the rest of her time filming at a studio in the suburbs of Whisperlyn City. After filming, she went straight back to her small apartment every day and didn't go anywhere else.
The apartment was rented by the company. She hadn't bought a house in Whisperlyn City.
She actually wasn't short of money. She had been slowly rising to fame over the past two years. In the entertainment industry, even if you're not popular, your salary is higher than that of ordinary people. And since she had become famous, a single endorsement could earn her millions of dollars.
However, a lot of the money earned by celebrities is taken by the company, so she didn't have much left for herself. Fortunately, she was Nina, and she had been investing privately. Plus, after DreamDazzle Beauty Co. grew, she could earn over a hundred million dollars a year from it.
She hadn't bought a house mainly because she hadn't planned to settle in Whisperlyn City.
She just wanted to wait for the right time to return to her hometown with her mother and live a peaceful life.
Although she had friends in Whisperlyn City, she hated the place.
She hadn't gone to Lucas's place for several days, and surprisingly, Lucas hadn't contacted her either.
She hoped Lucas was completely fed up with her and wouldn't look for her again.
Her agent Fiona had noticed this too.
One day after filming, Fiona came to pick her up. "What's going on between you and Mr. Nelson? I heard you went to the hospital to see him a few days ago?"
"You know about that?" Bernice started removing her makeup after getting in the car. She didn't like heavy makeup.
Fiona gave her a complicated look. "A reporter took a photo, but it was suppressed. You went to see Lucas because of Sarah, right?"Bernice's face stayed icy, not saying a word.
"I get it," Fiona sighed. "But Mr. Nelson is just like that. If he wants to back someone, what can we do? Just don't piss him off. Remember last year, how Sarah ticked him off? She thought she could run the show because she was gonna marry him, but she just made him mad. Mr. Nelson likes women who play along. Since you're with him, you should go with the flow. When you leave, he won't leave you hanging."
Bernice kept quiet.
Fiona went on, "Look at his past flings, like Aurelia. Just because they hooked up with Mr. Nelson, their careers took off. Aurelia even snagged Best Actress a couple of years ago."
"Fiona, enough. The more you talk, the more disgusted I get," Bernice said coldly. "Everyone in the company compares me to Sarah. You must've heard the snide remarks. With Lucas, I have no money, no dignity. Has he given me any real perks? The gigs I have now are because of my talent and hard work. I bust my ass every year, and not only does the company exploit me, but Lucas does too. Does he even see me as a person?"
Fiona sighed. She got Bernice's frustration better than anyone. Just like how she was often belittled by Sarah's agent, Tessa, who looked down on Bernice.
But what could Fiona do?
In the entertainment world, Lucas was the big boss.
"Fiona, let's drop it. If Lucas is so hell-bent on backing Sarah, let him. It's just a woman. He can get his kicks with anyone. Even if I find someone powerful, it would be better than Lucas."
That was Bernice's true feeling.
Lucas thought he was all that, thanks to those women who pampered him.
Fiona couldn't help but chuckle, but she agreed with Bernice. If Lucas stopped chasing Bernice, it would be a relief. Bernice was different from Sarah; she had real talent.
Being with Lucas, Bernice didn't get any perks, and it made Fiona, her agent, constantly worry about scandalous photos.
The next day, Sunday, Cassie and Laura invited her to go shopping after work.
After shopping, the three of them were beat and ordered some coffee to chill. The coffee shop was playing songs from the Singing Sensation Show. Hearing the familiar voice, Laura was ticked off. "Ugh, isn't that Sarah's voice? She's back. She hasn't been blacklisted."
Cassie glanced at her lightly. "I was watching TV at home yesterday and saw her on the Singing Sensation Show. She was a guest and even covered some old songs. She was trending last night, with a bunch of fake accounts hyping her up."
"Shameless. Her voice isn't even half as good as yours, Cassie."
Laura had zero respect for Sarah. "Is she planning a comeback?"
Both of them looked at Bernice.
Bernice put down her coffee cup and calmly said, "Lucas is spending a lot of money to promote her."
"Is Lucas out of his mind?" Laura had never hated Lucas as much as she did at that moment. "Does he really like someone like Sarah?"
"There must be another reason," Bernice said lightly. "Lucas is a cold-blooded guy. There must be some interest involved."
"Come to think of it, I always found it weird how Sarah suddenly got popular and cozy with Lucas," Cassie said. "Do you want me to dig into it?"
Bernice felt a bit warm inside. "No need. It's just some insignificant people and things."
Laura looked at her with admiration. "Bernice, I admire you. You have such a good attitude. If it were me, I might have died from anger."
