Chapter 454
Because she couldn't stop her own husband.
Almost laughing at the absurdity of it all, she asked, "Can you at least tell me, do you know Joyce Ray, in light of the favor I did for you yesterday?" There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Looks like you do," Cas Cassie deduced, her grip on the phone tightening. "Was I the one they played, the one they deceived? You seem to pity me.""As long as you're brave in your heart, you don't need to worry about what others think," Nina replied softly.Cas Cassie managed a wry smile. "Alright, I won't press you. One more thing, your brother Nathan Zenith is troubling my good friend Laura Miller. Tell him if anything happens to her, I won't let him off easy.""Nathan Zenith..." Nina's voice was tinged with irritation. "I will handle it. And let me give you a piece of advice, Miss Brooks. It’s best to keep that Joyce Ray away from Joseph."Cas Cassie's heart skipped a beat. "I sent her away last night.""Some people just can't let things go," Nina hesitated, her words trailing off as a clamor suddenly erupted from outside the office. Swiftly, Michael pushed past Joe and barged in."I've got to run, talk later," Cas Cassie said as she ended the call, her eyes fixating on the fuming Michael. A lightbulb went off—was he the person Nina was referring to who wouldn't let things go? She was finding it harder and harder to read people these days."Michael, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit to my humble office?" Cas Cassie asked coolly, lifting her head with a measured gaze."Cas Cassie, cut the crap. Did you have Joseph dismiss Joyce Ray?" Michael slammed his palm on the desk, his eyes blazing with anger. "How can you be so petty, a woman like you—I thought I was beginning to see you in a better light."Cas Cassie didn't even blink. "You're not the one with me, so frankly, your opinion doesn't matter to me.""I'm Joseph's friend and I know her. Do you really think she'd like your aggressive and unpleasant demeanor?"Michael scoffed, "Joyce Ray acts so cautious around you while you strut around full of yourself. What, you think you're something special because you've climbed the ladder and now you look down on everyone? I'll tell you this, with that kind of attitude, no man will want to stick around."The sting of his words caused a dull ache in Cas Cassie. "So what is this, you defending Joyce Ray? Are you into her? Or perhaps you're hoping she’ll replace me, become your new sister-in-law?"Michael was livid. "Are you crazy? I treat her like a sister. I just can't stand you mistreating her.""Me? Mistreat her?" Cas Cassie was exasperated. “Is that what Joyce Ray told you?""Joyce Ray is too kind-hearted to speak ill of anyone. But I'm not naive," Michael warned ominously. "Cas Cassie, if you dare mistreat Joyce Ray again, even if Joseph supports you, I won't let you off lightly."With a final glance, Michael headed for the door. "I've known Joseph for over twenty years. How long have you known her? Ponder that." Cas Cassie remained seated, motionless. That evening, Joseph didn’t call, not even once. Joe was there; she couldn't believe he wasn't aware, unless he tacitly approved of Michael's conduct. After work, she didn't head back to her beachside villa.Instead, she wandered alone, grabbing a bite to eat and strolling the streets, enjoying a rare moment of relaxation.
