Chapter 986 We Used to Be in Love

"No, thank you." She shook her head. "You don't need to be responsible for me. The Jude family wants a child, right? They even used this child to threaten me. I'll give birth to it, but I won't marry you."

Michael never expected that she would rather have the child out of wedlock than marry him. He should have been happy, but inexplicably, he felt a bit uneasy.

"Laura, do you really hate me that much?"

'Yes.' Laura silently cursed in her heart but still said seriously, "Three years ago, I had a date. We started dating in college and were together for four or five years. Our parents even met to discuss marriage. But on that day, Benjamin broke off the engagement for Isla, who played with him when they were children. She was always his first priority. When we went on dates, Benjamin brought her along. When Isla was sick, he took care of her. Benjamin said he only saw Isla as a sister and didn't love her. But not long after, I couldn't take it anymore and broke up with him, so he started dating her. After we broke up, he even accused me of being narrow-minded, saying Isla was the one who truly loved him and that I didn't love him enough."

Michael was stunned. He suddenly felt a bit sorry for her. All along, he thought he had it rough in love, but Laura had it rough, too.

"So you still can't forget Benjamin?" Michael asked.

"Yes." Laura shook her head. "Even though I was the one who broke up in my last relationship, I was actually the one abandoned. I don't want to go through that again. If we get together because of the child, and you don't have me in your heart, you still can't forget Megan; I'm afraid I'll end up being abandoned again."

Michael was silent for a long time. He just watched her seriously, feeling very conflicted inside.

"Alright then, if you need anything in the future, you can always come to me. I'll find you a nanny, and stop eating those unhealthy foods," Michael said.

"Okay." Laura nodded.

At the mall, Cassie walked aimlessly with Laura. "So you ended up making this agreement with Michael?"

"What else could I do? You can't even compete with Megan. How could I?" Laura shook her head. "Besides, if I lived with Michael every day, and he cooks so well, I'm afraid over time, I would become dependent on him. I don't want to depend on anyone."

"You're just afraid of getting hurt again." Cassie sighed. "Being a single mom isn't easy. A child could even affect your next marriage, and once they're born, you have to take responsibility for them."

"What can I do? No matter how famous I am, I'm just a formula specialist. How could I possibly compete with the Jude family?" Laura smiled bitterly.

Cassie fell silent.

Indeed, the Jude family's status in both political and business circles was incomparable.

After dinner, Cassie received a call from Spencer after dropping Laura off.

"Mr. Foster doesn't seem suspicious," Spencer said. "He goes to work on time every day, sometimes attends business dinners, and ignores women who try to flirt with him. He doesn't drink or smoke at social events, and he sit alone while others were accompanied by women. He actively promotes funding for children's charities in poor areas and is very kind to his employees. I asked around at the Wit Group, and no one had anything bad to say about him."

Cassie frowned, pondering, 'Did I overthink things? Or did Joseph lie to me and never actually send that video to David?'

Spencer asked in confusion, "There is nothing wrong with David. What exactly did you want me to investigate?"

"Forget it. Stop following him and come back." Cassie hung up the phone.

When she returned to the Chapman family villa, it was already past eight in the evening. David was telling stories to the two children, his face gentle and his voice low.

Cassie felt a wave of guilt. She had doubted him before, and she was really over the line.

After finishing the story, David noticed her. "You're back."

Aiden glared at Cassie. "You're Sophia and Oliver's mom, but you're always coming home late. David does a better job than you."

"I am sorry. I won't do it again," Cassie sincerely apologized.

"It's okay. You're busy. I can take care of Sophia and Oliver for you," David said with a gentle smile.

Cassie looked at him and made a decision in her heart.

That night, while Cassie was putting Sophia and Oliver to bed, Sophia suddenly said, "Mommy, Grandma called me today. She said she misses me, and so do Great-grandparents. I want to go stay with them for a while."

"What's so good about that place?" Oliver said irritably.

Sophia pouted and said nothing.

Cassie patted her head. "Okay."

If the Hernandez family truly cared for Sophia, Cassie didn't mind Sophia having more family.

Oliver grunted in displeasure and turned his back to them.

"Joseph said he'd come to pick me up tomorrow," Sophia said.

Cassie was taken aback and nodded.

The next morning, at 7:30, the guard informed her that Joseph was at the gate of the Chapman family villa.

Cassie put a small backpack on Sophia and walked her out.

Joseph stood under a tree at the gate, wearing a shirt and a gray suit vest. He held a cigarette in one hand and had the other in his pocket. When he saw Cassie coming out, he just looked at her.

As he looked, his deep eyes turned slightly red, making Cassie wonder if the smoke had induced the tears.

His voice was hoarse. "Sophia, I'm here to pick you up."

Sophia nodded. "Joseph, you should stop smoking. It's bad for your health."

"Okay, I won't smoke anymore." Joseph opened the car door and let her in. "I'll take you to Grandma's place."

"Sophia, call me if you need anything," Cassie reminded her worriedly.

"Okay, I won't have any problems. I'm a grown-up now." Sophia pouted. Even though she was about to be separated from her mommy, she still felt a bit reluctant.

Joseph closed the door, and Cassie waved from the car window before turning to go back to the villa.

"I know now. Three years ago, I was hypnotized by Megan," Joseph suddenly said. He looked at her back, his voice filled with deep sorrow. "I went to Silverwood a few days ago and found Maria. I learned a lot from her. We used to be very much in love."

"Alright," Cassie replied calmly, but she was deeply shocked inwardly.

She thought, 'He actually found out?'

Cassie had thought Joesph would never realize it.

Joseph felt deeply disappointed as Cassie just said "alright."

He asked himself inwardly, 'Doesn't she have any reaction, not even excitement, sadness, or heartache?'
