Chapter 213

"Joseph remained silent, arching an eyebrow at Cassie, curious how she'd introduce him.

""He's my boyfriend,"" Cassie stated boldly, without evasion.

""Samuel, I understand what your grandfather and the board are after, but I’m already taken. I'm really busy and frankly, I don't have time for your games,"" she said pointedly.

Samuel, stubborn as ever, pushed back, ""Think it over. An alliance through marriage with the board would be beneficial for both sides. The guy you've chosen, beside his looks, seems to have nothing to offer. He's just not right for you.""

Joseph stayed cool, a smirk twitching at the corner of his mouth as he looked at Samuel like he was something bizarre.

""Thanks for the advice, but it's him I like. I'm helplessly, hopelessly in love and he's the one, so please, just go,"" Cassie urged, uninterested in being polite.

""How ungrateful,"" Samuel glowered at her before finally turning to leave.

Cassie breathed a sigh of relief, but upon facing Joseph’s suggestive gaze and recalling her sappy declarations, her cheeks flushed. ""I was just trying to get rid of him. Don't get the wrong idea...""

""What is there to misunderstand?"" Joseph's mood suddenly darkened, his eyes narrowing, a mock smile on his face. ""Are you saying you're not desperately in love with me?""
She was at a loss for words; though she had a response to his question, she couldn't voice it in front of his intimidating demeanor.
Her silence drew a sly smile from Joseph, ""Get in the car.""

They joined the traffic on the main road.
Cassie, trying to start a conversation, asked, 'Have you eaten yet?
Before he could answer, his stomach betrayed him with a rumbling sound.

After a pause that lasted two seconds, Cassie couldn't help but giggle. ""It's just past six, and you're this hungry? Don't tell me you skipped lunch.""
""The grub at the office is awful,"" Joseph grumbled. ""You haven't been around to cook for a while, now have you? Think you can just slack off because there's no deal between us anymore?""

""I've been swamped lately,"" Cassie admitted with a hint of regret. ""Tell you what, I'll make you breakfast in the morning, and you can take it to work, okay?""

""Do I look like a kid to you?"" Joseph shot her a glare, but after a few seconds, he relented, ""Guess that will have to do.""

Cassie was speechless.
That was a quick turnaround.

Joseph missed her cooking. Since she began at Peace Group, she hadn't prepared him a proper meal. ""Cook dinner for me tonight. I want a rack of lamb, garlic shrimp...""

""Hit the brakes! Let's do KFC tonight. I've got a sudden craving for their spicy chicken wings,"" Cassie grabbed his arm, interrupting him excitedly.

""Are you insane? Wanting me to eat that kind of junk food?"" Joseph was appalled, his eyebrows knitting together in frustration.

""That's not fair. Many people enjoy this 'junk food,' you know. Look at how busy the place is. No, we need to stop now; I can practically taste those spicy wings.""

Cassie playfully scratched his arm, reminding herself that now, without the old agreement, she no longer had to always accommodate him. She could now drag him along for the things she wanted to do, wanted to eat.

Joseph had no choice but to pull over and park.

The pair walked into the KFC.
The bustling crowd and the greasy scent of chicken made Joseph scrunch up his nose in discomfort.

""Go grab a spot; sit over there,"" Cassie pointed to a recently vacated table still cluttered with trash.

""I'd rather not,"" Joseph replied.
