Chapter 486

Joseph gazed down at Cassie, his expression betraying no hint of pain. "Go on, bite me. Didn't you once tell me that Zhao Min bit Zhang Wuji because her love for him was so profound? The deeper the love, the deeper the bite."

Cassie was taken aback, almost biting her own tongue in surprise. How was it possible that he remembered such an old conversation when she had always thought his memory was flawed?

"Changed your mind about biting? Worried it'll cause me pain?" Joseph's voice was smooth and electrifying as he teased her, his fingers stroking her ear as gently as one would pet a kitten. "Don't fret, I can handle a little pain."

Cassie was left utterly disconcerted.

She found herself ensnared in a dilemma: to bite him would be to demonstrate her deep affection, while to hold back would be to spare him pain. Regardless of her choice, she couldn't outmaneuver him in this argument.

"Why don't we just sleep?" Joseph suggested, turning off the light and settling down for the night.

As Joseph's breathing gradually steadied into the rhythm of sleep, Cassie lay awake, her stomach rumbling with hunger. She and Nina had eaten quite a bit earlier, yet it wasn't even eleven o'clock and she was already famished. When had her appetite become so insatiable?

The following morning, Cassie awoke at nine, mortified that she had overslept. She rushed downstairs to find Joseph lounging on the couch, engrossed in the newspaper. He rose immediately upon seeing her, "I made some noodles for breakfast, just..."

"Joseph, did you turn off my alarm?" Cassie interjected, her tone betraying her agitation.

"It was blaring for ages and you were sleeping like a log, so yes, I turned it off."

"That's impossible! The slightest noise always wakes me up."

Cassie was indignant, refusing to accept that she could sleep through anything. Her wide eyes, tousled morning hair, and rosy cheeks only amplified her adorable frustration.

Joseph couldn't suppress a chuckle. "I anticipated you'd accuse me, so fortunately, I recorded a video as evidence."

He played the video, which showed her blissfully asleep on his arm, oblivious to the obnoxious alarm. Instead of waking, she merely furrowed her brow, pulled the covers over her head, and continued sleeping.

Cassie was left speechless.

Had she not seen it with her own eyes, she would never have believed she could sleep so soundly. And on his arm, no less.

Feeling deflated, Cassie took a seat, bracing herself for the start of another unpredictable day. "Take it easy, I'm about to cook the pasta. It'll be ready in no time," Joseph said, chuckling as he glanced at her flushed cheeks before heading towards the kitchen.

Cassie was about to object, insisting she wasn't hungry, but her growling stomach betrayed her.

She let it slide, reasoning that she had always cooked for him in the past, and now it was his turn to reciprocate.

Three minutes later, a steaming bowl of pasta was served.

Cassie took a bite, but the taste was off.

"Did you forget to add salt?"

"That can't be right, I'm certain I added it." Joseph sampled a strand of pasta, only to realize his mistake.

"Never mind, just pass me the salt, will you?" Cassie sighed.

Joseph hung his head in frustration and started walking in the wrong direction.

Cassie frowned, noticing his error, "Wait, the salt is in the kitchen. Why are you heading towards the bathroom?"

Joseph paused, as if her words had stirred his memory, and redirected himself towards the kitchen.

Behind him, Cassie's frown deepened.

His behavior was eerily similar to her grandmother's initial signs of old-age forgetfulness, but Joseph was far too young for that...

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

She attended to the gate, and soon Walter entered, his expression grave. "Rosalind, I conducted an investigation overnight, and Olivia Brooks has been missing for months."
