Chapter 499

Exhaustion weighed heavily on Grandma. With a dismissive wave of her hand, she signaled the butler to escort the mother and daughter from her presence.

"Grandma, I apologize..." Cassie's voice was laden with regret.

"Save your apologies. I am well aware that the fault lies with Celeste. I may not hold you in the highest regard, but I am not unreasonable," Grandma retorted.

Surprisingly, Cassie found solace in Grandma's blunt words. The straightforwardness of the matriarch was oddly comforting.

"If anyone dares to bully you, report it to me immediately. As Joseph's wife, you will inherit the responsibility of this mansion when we are no longer here. You should familiarize yourself with it," Grandma advised, gesturing towards the expansive manor.

Cassie was taken aback. Could it be that she was finally accepted by her grandmother?

However, given the current state of her relationship with Joseph, the prospect of them lasting till the end was far from certain.

Grandma, noting Cassie's silence, studied her face before sighing in exasperation. She turned to the butler and remarked, "Such a waste of a beautiful face. She is, after all, a Hernandez. What a pity..."

The butler nodded in agreement, "Indeed. But I've heard Joseph is tirelessly seeking the best doctors for her treatment."

"Let's hope they can cure her."

As the clock struck half-past nine in the evening, Cassie dialed Laura's number. "How's the progress?"

"Relax. It's a breeze to obtain a few strands of hair from the prison in Madison, which is the stronghold of the Miller family," Laura assured confidently. "I've expedited an emergency test. The results should be out any moment now."

"Thank you."

"Oh, come on. We're practically sisters. No need for formalities. Just ensure you take good care of my goddaughter and godson because I am definitely going to be their godmother," Laura teased.

"Of course, you're the only choice for godmother," Cassie agreed, ending the call. Suddenly, the sliding door to the balcony creaked open. Joseph, clad in a deep blue robe and carrying a stack of books, entered. "Who's going to be my daughter’s godmother, Laura or Nina?"

His sudden intrusion and voice sent a shiver down Cassie's spine.

"Joseph, must you always startle me? Grandma instructed you to sleep in the adjacent room. How did you manage to get here from the balcony?"

"I jumped over," Joseph nonchalantly replied, sprawling onto the bed as if it were his own.

Cassie massaged her forehead, recalling the two-meter gap between the balconies. Joseph always found a way into her room, no matter the circumstances. "Joseph, return to your room now or I'll alert Grandma..."

"Go ahead. She's asleep and her phone is switched off," Joseph confidently pulled her into his arms, his left hand reaching towards her belly. "Let's see if our twins have grown any bigger today."

"They're barely a month old. There won't be any noticeable changes," Cassie brushed his hand away. "Leave. I need to sleep."
