Chapter 741

Alright, although he also thinks so, he hasn't tasted Mom in Cassie's dishes for the time being. Maybe Cassie's dishes taste very similar to those made by Sophia and Cassie's mom.
"Okay, it's normal for kids to be hungry at this time. I'll make you a dessert."
Cassie patted her little head and turned to the kitchen. Sophia immediately followed, looking like an eager little cat waiting to be fed.
"Isn't it not good to give kids dessert late at night ?" Joseph frowned and criticized. He couldn't forget that she had just accused him of letting Sophia use the phone, and now she was giving the child dessert so late.
Cassie completely ignored him, took out three eggs from the fridge, and separated the egg whites from the yolks.
Her fingers were very slender, and her wrists were so fair that they seemed inviting to touch.
Joseph was lost in thought until Sophia answered him, "The dessert Cassie makes isn't very sweet."
"Sophia, how do you know so much, as if you understand her so well?" Joseph looked puzzled.
Without lifting her head, Cassie explained, "Because Liam used to ask me to take care of her often, especially when her mom had just left."
As Joseph's understanding grew, so did his dissatisfaction.
The dessert she made was quickly ready in less than fifteen minutes.
Joseph noticed that she had whipped the egg whites into a creamy texture and sprinkled some raisins and nuts on top. This was very nutritious, much healthier than those cakes outside, and good for kids to eat.
When the kitchen was filled with a delicious aroma, even he, a man, felt a bit tempted to eat.
After it was baked, Sophia sat at the table, enjoying the fragrant dessert.
Joseph felt a twinge of envy. He envied that Sophia was a child, and as soon as she spoke, Cassie would make it for her.
He walked back to the kitchen door again, where Cassie was tidying up the kitchen. The warm yellow light fell on her head, making her look radiant even though it was daytime. At this moment, she inexplicably seemed like a woman radiating maternal glory.
"You seem to understand children very well," Joseph spoke up. "Women who haven't been mothers usually find it difficult to deal with children. Sophia really likes you now, almost treating you like her mother."
Cassie's mood became tense. Not only did Sophia see her as a mother, but she actually was her mother. But she dared not reveal this fact.
She played with her hair, pretending to be calm, and she said, "No matter how many parenting books I read when I was pregnant, they didn't seem to help. Maybe you can't grasp how I feel. Ever since I moved abroad, every time I see kids, I'm reminded of the one I lost. It tugs at my heartstrings. Thinking how adorable my child would have been. As time goes by, I find joy in interacting with kids and start to get them. But never mind, you probably wouldn't get it even if I explained. Still, I'm over the moon that Sophia likes me. That's a real silver lining. Poor kid, she's had it tough."
Joseph felt a sudden pang of pain in his heart.
How could he not understand? Just like him, now that he saw Sophia, wouldn't he often think of the child he lost?
Feeling troubled, he changed the subject, "Why do you help Liam take care of his daughter? Don't you think he leads a very chaotic personal life?"
"Sorry, I don't think so." Cassie glanced at him disdainfully, "At least he doesn't have extramarital affairs, nor does he force his wife to sign divorce agreements. He's a normal person."
Once again being retorted, Joseph felt quite aggrieved.
