Chapter 1727 We've Already Secretly Gotten Our Marriage Certificate.
6 PM.
Laura walked into the house, exhausted from work, and saw Rose cooking in the kitchen.
From what she knew, if Derek wasn't visiting, Rose would never step into the kitchen; the meals were usually prepared by the housekeeper.
"Aren't you making Elliott's favorite dishes?" Laura glanced over. "That's unusual. You usually don't think much of Elliott."
"Elliott said he's coming home for dinner tonight. He has something important to tell us."
Rose happily continued preparing the food. "I suspect it has to do with his new girlfriend. Maybe he wants to discuss bringing her over for us to meet. You know, Elliott has never stayed out late when he's dating someone. He might be getting married soon."
Laura's feelings became complicated. "Well, you take your time."
Let Rose enjoy this brief moment of happiness. When Elliott comes back and tells the truth, Rose might lose her appetite for days.
Half an hour later, Elliott and Luke came home from work together.
Rose didn't ask immediately. She waited until all the dishes were served before asking Elliott, "Your dad said you have something important to tell us. What is it?"
She looked at Elliott with great anticipation.
Elliott's lips moved, but Laura quickly interjected, "Why don't we finish eating first? These carrots look good; I'll give some to Maeve."
Maeve had already washed her little hands and eagerly grabbed the carrot shreds, happily licking them.
Even though Maeve only had one tooth, it didn't stop her from enjoying the food.
Rose reminded, "Be careful, don't let her choke."
She paused and looked back at Elliott.
Elliott thought for a moment and finally said, "Let's eat first. We'll talk after."
He understood Laura's concern. Once he spoke, Luke and Rose might lose their appetite.
"Your child," Rose said disappointedly. To get news about Elliott's girlfriend sooner, she ate quickly, and even Luke sped up.
Ten minutes later, Rose said, "Go ahead."
Elliott, who hadn't finished eating, had to put down his fork. "Mom, I want to bring my wife home for dinner tomorrow."
"Wife?" Luke and Laura were both confused.
Rose was stunned for a moment, then glanced at Luke. "Young people nowadays like to call their girlfriends 'wife' even if they're not married yet."
Luke and Laura nodded in realization, but they still found it strange. Elliott didn't seem like that kind of person.
"Mom, no, I mean my actual wife," Elliott said calmly. "We secretly got married."
Laura's fork slipped from her hand and fell onto the table.
She looked at Elliott in disbelief.
Luke was even more shocked, slamming the table and standing up. "What did you say?"
Rose clutched her chest. "Elliott, you must be crazy. You got married without saying a word. Did you ask us? Did you get our approval? Yes, I want you to settle down soon, but you can't just do it without telling us. It's so disrespectful."
"Your mom is right," Luke said angrily. "We're not unreasonable parents. As long as you like her, we don't demand a perfect match. We don't care if her conditions are a bit worse. But your behavior is very disappointing."
"Tell us, who is this woman?" Rose's good mood was completely ruined. For Elliott to secretly get married, she must not be a good woman. "Don't tell us she's not a decent woman."
"She's my girlfriend from when I studied abroad, my first love."
Elliott explained, "We planned to get married after returning home, but her family was too well-off, far beyond what the Miller family could match. She was afraid her family would hurt me if they found out about us, so she painfully broke up with me. Later, for family interests, she was forced to marry a seriously ill man. But that man died within two years. She's been alone all these years. We met again after she came to Whisperlyn City, and this time, I don't want to miss her."
"So, she's a divorced woman?" Rose immediately caught the key point and felt terrible.
Elliott frowned. "So what if she's divorced? I love her, and she doesn't have any children. You've been pushing me to get married and find a girlfriend. I've tried, but I can't accept anyone else. I can't deceive myself anymore. Besides her, I might never love another woman in my life."
Rose was so angry that her liver hurt. No wonder Elliott got married before telling them.
If she had known, she would never have agreed.
"Mom, what's wrong with a divorced woman?" Laura suddenly said, looking hurt. "I'm divorced too. Does that mean I don't deserve to marry Derek?"
Seeing Laura's disappointed look, Rose's heart ached. She realized her thoughts were too selfish. "Laura, that's not what I meant. There's nothing wrong with being divorced. She didn't want to be divorced either."
Rose spoke awkwardly. After all, Violet didn't mind Rose being divorced, so she shouldn't mind others being divorced either.
Thinking this way, she felt a bit better.
Fine, a divorced Rose found an unmarried Derek.
An unmarried Elliott found a divorced woman. Let's call it even.
"Laura, did you know about this?" Luke suddenly asked sharply.
"I knew, and I've met her, but I didn't know they were married," Laura said, glancing at Elliott. "You kept it well."
"So, what kind of person is she?" Rose asked. "Is she easy to get along with? Elliott said her family is better off than ours. Could she be from one of the wealthy families in Whisperlyn City? I might have seen her at a recent banquet."
"Her character is good," Laura said with a smile. "If Elliott is with her, he won't need to work hard for the rest of his life."
Elliott remained silent.
"Her conditions are that good?" Luke pondered. "Elliott said her husband died within two years of marriage. That sounds familiar. I think I've heard it somewhere."
"Julia," Rose said. "When we visited the Jude family, I heard someone mention that Julia married a seriously ill man."
Luke fell silent, as well as Rose. Both of their eyes widened, and they stared at Elliott angrily. "Elliott, don't tell me that woman is..."
