Chapter 411

"Cassie was caught in a paradox of laughter and tears, her emotions teetering on the precipice of amusement and despair. "Such a child," she murmured to herself, shaking her head in disbelief. This was not the behavior she had come to expect from a grown man. Nonetheless, she decided to indulge him, resolving to prepare his favorite lamb chops for dinner.

After a long day at work, Cassie made a detour to the local grocery store, ensuring she had the perfect cut of meat for the evening meal. As she drove home, the soft hum of the evening news filled the car, a comforting background noise to her thoughts.

Suddenly, an urgent bulletin cut through the regular programming, shattering the tranquility of her drive. "Breaking news - Leo Corporation's CEO, Leo Chapman, was involved in a horrific collision with a semi-truck half an hour ago. The driver of the vehicle died at the scene, and Leo Chapman has been rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The wreck was a gruesome scene, and tomorrow's stock market is expected to be highly volatile..."

Cassie's mind buzzed, the words of the broadcast echoing in her ears. Despite their brief time together, Leo Chapman was the only family she had left. A car accident? The thought sent a jolt of panic through her, causing her to make a hasty U-turn and speed towards the hospital.

The corridor outside the ER was a sea of somber faces, the Chapman family gathered in a collective state of anxiety. Vera, her eyes swollen with tears, spotted Cassie and charged at her in a fit of rage. "You jinx! Every time you come back, trouble follows. This is all your fault."

Cassie, her eyes blazing with anger, shook off Vera's hand. "My dad's inside, his life hanging by a thread, and instead of worrying about your own husband, you launch into me? Are you out of your mind?"

Vera, taken aback by Cassie's fierce gaze, retorted, "Who's launching into you? You're the one who caused this. Of course, I'm worried about him—more than anyone!"

Cassie's response was laced with despair and anger. "If that's the case, then cool it with the anger. We're all upset. Can't you just stop fighting? I've only just got my dad back. We haven't even had a couple of days together, and I can't bear to lose him now."

Her plea fell on deaf ears as Vera, infuriated by Cassie's words, prepared to retaliate. "What do you mean 'stop'? It's clear that you..."

"Enough, just shut it!" Margaret, overwhelmed by grief, found Cassie's bitter tone justified and Vera's behavior insufferable. "Cassie is right. While we’re all frantic and he's fighting for his life, you're here picking fights. Just stop it."

Vera, her face flushed with humiliation, covered her face and burst into tears in the corridor.

An hour later, the doctor emerged, his face etched with regret. "I'm sorry, but while we've managed to stabilize Mr. Lee, I fear he may not regain consciousness."

Vera, frantic with worry, asked, "Do you mean he's going to be in a vegetative state?"

The doctor nodded, "But there's still hope. Some patients have woken up after several years, or even over a decade."

Margaret, overcome with sorrow, cried out, "Oh, my poor boy. Why did this have to happen? He was just in a car accident."

Luna, tears streaming down her face, tried to comfort her grandmother. "Grandma, don't be sad, I believe Dad will wake up." Despite Leo Chapman's recent distance, he had always been kind to her.

Vera, her eyes covered, wailed, "I'll wait for your dad to wake up even if it kills me. Mom, Dad, don't worry, I'll take good care of him."

Chapman was about to respond when Cassie interjected, "Grandpa, I want to be the one to look after Dad. Firstly, I've only had such a short time with him, I want to fulfill my duty as his daughter. Even if he’s in a vegetative state, at least I can be with him, see him."

Margaret, deeply moved by Cassie's words, could only manage a soft, "Child..."

Cassie continued, "Secondly, Joseph is close with Dr. Lucas, who's an exceptional physician. Most of the top private hospitals in Madison belong to Dr. Lucas, and even if he can't help, Joseph's connections are widespread. Maybe he could find an expert from overseas to treat him..."
