Chapter 252

"Cassie was heartbroken. Ultimately, if it weren't for his own poor choices, she wouldn't have been duped by Joseph.

---

It was ten o'clock at night.

Joseph walked in against the biting wind and quickly headed upstairs. He hurried back down after barely two minutes, asking, “Hasn't Cassie come home yet?”

""No,"" the staff member replied, visibly intimidated by his demeanor.

""Why hasn't she?""

""I don't know. She's not answering her phone,"" the staffer said. The temperature in the villa seemed to drop, making her shiver.

Joseph scoffed, ""Fantastic! After sneaking around with David, she can't even bother to keep a low profile. It's ten o'clock, and there’s still no sign of her, no calls. Some habits are indeed hard to break.""
""Mr. Hernandez!"" Walter burst in. There was urgency in his tone. ""I've just heard that Brandon Wright attacked Miss Brooks outside the police station. David intervened and took two stabs for her. She's safe, but David's in the ER with severe injuries.""

Joseph's dark eyes narrowed, and he froze. “Where the hell was Joe? Wasn't she supposed to protect Cassie?”
Walter sighed. With a note of caution in his voice, he said, ""Mr. Hernandez, you seem to forget. After you saw that photo on the news that day, you blew up and told Joe to stop watching her, to let her fend for herself.”
Joseph lost his temper, his agitation palpable. “Does she even have any common sense? How could she believe I wouldn't care?""

""Joe always takes your word as gospel,"" said Walter.

""Head to the hospital."" With purposeful strides, Joseph made his way out.

Upon arriving, he barged into the VIP room without hesitation.

David lay there unconscious. An oxygen mask adorned his face, and Cassie was gently wiping it with a towel.

That scene pierced Joseph's eyes. There was a time she had cared for him with the same tenderness, and now she was tending to another man.

""Come here,"" he commanded, each word deliberate and clear. ""Come back with me.""

Cassie paused, shaking her head. ""I can't leave. He hasn't woken up yet.""

""Don't you understand, Cassie?"" Flames of anger ignited within Joseph, his voice chilling and stern. ""This is your last chance.""

His words sent a chill through Cassie. She had narrowly escaped death earlier that day—was he blind to her bloodied state? Couldn’t he show any concern for her? ""Joseph, be reasonable. Without David, I would have been dead. He saved your girlfriend's life. If you can't be grateful, then at least don’t exude such a cold attitude.""

""Cold?"" Joseph's steps toward her were measured and deliberate. After all he had done for her, did he deserve to be accused of being cold-hearted?

The accusation stabbed him like a knife, the pain searing.

""You knew why Brandon Wright wanted me dead,"" Cassie retorted with a scornful smile. ""Are you so desperate for money that you'd stoop to fighting despicable legal battles, Joseph? Or is it fame you're chasing, building a reputation on the misfortunes of others in the ruthless world of law?""
