Chapter 485
"Joe, get out!" Cassie commanded, her voice echoing in the silence of the room.
She could discern his dismissive attitude, his lack of concern for her feelings. In response, she lashed out, her foot connecting with his shin in a furious kick. With a huff, she turned on her heel and stormed up the staircase.
Joe, unperturbed by her outburst, followed at a leisurely pace, a smirk playing on his lips as he ascended the stairs after her.
Upon reaching the upper level, Cassie prepared herself for a soothing shower, only to be met with an unexpected sight. Her closet, usually a sanctuary of her own clothing, was now overrun with men's attire, from shirts to boxers.
Frustration pounded in her temples as she turned to confront him. "Joseph, who gave you the audacity to relocate your wardrobe into my closet?"
"I've taken up residence here, haven't I? I require clean attire," Joseph replied, his tone nonchalant as he stood behind her.
Cassie's hand closed around a handful of his clothes, ready to scatter them across the floor. However, his casual retort stopped her in her tracks. "Proceed, discard them. Walter can simply deliver more tomorrow."
His audacious indifference left her speechless. With a sigh of surrender, Cassie conceded. "Very well, you may stay. But could you consider occupying the adjacent room?"
Joseph's dark eyes flashed as he shook his head. "Impossible. The entire purpose of my relocation was to share a room with you. Why would I opt for the room next door? That would be nonsensical."
His nonchalant attitude towards this intrusion into her personal space left her feeling helpless.
Feeling the onset of another potential argument, Cassie retreated to the bathroom for her shower, hoping the cool water would soothe her frayed nerves.
Emerging from her shower refreshed, she found Joseph attempting to mop the dining room floor, his movements awkward as if he was unfamiliar with the task.
Suppressing the whirlwind of emotions within her, Cassie busied herself with laundry, stuffing her clothes into the washing machine on the balcony.
By the time she had finished, Joseph had moved on to mopping the living room. Ten minutes later, she descended the stairs to retrieve some yogurt from the refrigerator, only to find him, inexplicably, mopping the dining room once again.
She frowned, her patience wearing thin. "Enough, Joseph. I understand your intent to clean, but there's no need to mop the dining room repeatedly."
"I haven't been repeating myself," Joseph retorted, a hint of frustration seeping into his voice. "I simply haven't managed to clean the dining room to my satisfaction."
Cassie's eyes narrowed. "Joseph, you're not being truthful."
His handsome face registered a flicker of hurt, causing Cassie to soften slightly.
She watched him for a moment, trying to discern if he was indeed lying. Then, it dawned on her. Just like when he couldn't recall inquiring about Olivia Brooks, he was exhibiting symptoms she had never seen before—headaches and fainting spells.
A wave of concern washed over her.
"Never mind, let's leave it at that," she said, quickly retreating upstairs. Once in her room, she locked the door securely behind her.
However, less than thirty minutes later, Joseph effortlessly unlocked the door and swung it open.
Caught in the midst of applying lotion, Cassie let out a startled shriek at the intrusion. She scrambled to cover herself, wrestling with her clothes as her skin remained exposed in the ensuing chaos.
Joseph, who had no initial intention of intruding, found himself blushing at her frantic attempts to dress.
"Your sleeve is inside out," he pointed out, stepping forward. He gently steadied her bare shoulder with one hand while correcting her sleeve with the other.
Once she had finally managed to dress herself, Cassie met Joseph's teasing gaze with a mixture of embarrassment and irritation. "Joseph, how do you continually gain access to my room?"
With a nonchalant shrug, Joseph held up a key. "A master key—one that can unlock anything."
Stunned and somewhat incredulous that such a thing existed, Cassie reached out to snatch it. However, Joseph swiftly pulled it out of her reach. Caught off guard by his sudden movement, she stumbled forward, colliding with his chest.
"Easy, it's time to sleep," Joseph murmured, wrapping his arms around her.
Struggling to free herself without success, Cassie's frustration reached its peak. In a final act of defiance, she bit down on his shoulder.
