Chapter 1600 Deception
"Michael, I'm really busy here, I don't have time to argue with you. I'm hanging up."
After the call ended, Michael gripped his phone tightly, his face darkening.
He didn't care what Derek was up to; no matter what, he wouldn't let Laura have a chance to be with Derek.
Besides, the idea of them getting married was ridiculous.
Late at night, just as Michael was about to fall asleep, he received a Facebook message from Megan: [Michael, when are you coming back? I've thought it through. I hope we can get a divorce.]
He was stunned, finding it somewhat unbelievable.
Megan would take the initiative to ask for a divorce?
He was surprised and a bit momentarily confused.
Was Megan sincere, or was she trying to back off to gain ground?
In the past, he wouldn't have thought of Megan as so complicated, but ever since he saw the video of her abusing animals, her image in his mind had completely collapsed.
He called her back and asked, "Are you serious?"
"For you, there are many things I don't want to lie about."
Megan's sorrowful voice came from the other end, sounding particularly sad in the quiet of the night. "Michael, we met when we were young, but unfortunately, many things have changed since then. I used to be your cherished first love, but now you didn't even want to answer my calls. I remember everything you said that day.
"These days, every time I close my eyes, your words keep replaying in my mind. Really, I don't want things to be like this."
Megan began to sob softly again, "But I understand, if we insist on dragging this out, you'll only hate me more. Instead, let's get a divorce. I hope that when you think of me in the future, there will still be a bit of fondness, rather than disgust and resentment."
Michael remained silent for a long time.
He felt a sense of relief, but also a tinge of regret.
Were his words that day too harsh?
She didn't intentionally want to abuse animals; it was because she had experienced such fatal harm that her behavior became extreme.
He lived with her, yet he didn't notice her emotions at all. He was also responsible.
Besides, if it were him whose face was ruined and whose limbs had problems, he would probably have a drastic change in emotions too.
"Megan, I'm sorry. I was in a bad mood that day and said some impulsive things. Don't take my words to heart."
"I know, Michael. No one understands you better than I do. I've never blamed you. I only blame myself for being useless. Seeing you running around for the company these days, I couldn't help you at all. So, I've thought it through. I was wrong. I shouldn't hold you back. Let's get a divorce. Once you divorce me, your parents will forgive you. As long as they are willing to help you a little, you won't be as exhausted as you are now."
Megan took a deep breath and continued sadly, "I'm letting go. I hope the person I love can be relaxed and happy."
"Megan, don't say that." At this moment, Michael's anger towards her had dissipated, replaced by guilt. "Have you thought about what to do after the divorce?"
"I want to go abroad for treatment, hoping my legs can be cured. Besides, given my mental state, I'm not suitable for staying here. If people find out, it will only implicate you. Don't worry, if anyone asks about our divorce, I'll take all the blame. It has nothing to do with you."
"You don't need to do that. If you go abroad, no one will know you." Michael pondered for a moment and said, "Alright, but going abroad for treatment will cost a lot of money. I'll give you a large sum to ensure you live comfortably for the rest of your life."
"No, you're tight on funds right now."
"It's okay, I owe you this."
After hanging up, Michael felt much lighter.
Although he felt sorry for Megan, he really didn't want to maintain this marriage anymore.
He wanted to pursue Laura, but he knew that if he didn't get a divorce, he wouldn't have the right to do so.
However, he didn't have that much money on hand.
The next morning, after Julia and Aaron went to work, Michael approached James, "Dad, I want to borrow some money from you."
"Impossible." James waved his hand and turned to leave.
"Dad, not much, just fifty million dollars," Michael hurriedly said. "I've proposed a divorce with Megan. We've been discussing it for a while, and she finally agreed, but she wants eighty million dollars to agree to the divorce. The company is tight on funds, and I don't have that much money right now."
"Eighty million dollars?" James laughed angrily. "With her condition, she's worth eighty million dollars? Besides, you gave her a lot of money when you got married. This is extortion."
"Dad, there's no other way," Michael smiled bitterly. "She finally agreed. I really regret marrying her. I just want to divorce her and never have anything to do with her again."
"You insisted on marrying Megan back then." James was angry.
"Dad, please, I just want to get rid of Megan now. I promise, this is the only time I'll ask you for money. Besides, if it weren't for the fact that my real estate assets can't be sold quickly, I wouldn't need to borrow money from you."
James looked coldly at Michael in front of him, hesitated for a long time, and finally relented, "Ask my secretary for fifty million dollars later. I want to see your divorce decree within two days."
Although James didn't think much of Michael anymore, he was still his biological son. If he could end Michael and Megan's marriage, he wouldn't have to see Megan, a woman who disgusted him.
Besides, James always felt that the longer Michael stayed with Megan, the more he would be influenced by her.
"Thank you, Dad." Michael smiled, "Don't worry, if she doesn't agree to the divorce, I won't give her the money."
As he left, Michael felt relieved.
Megan had never threatened Michael, but he was willing. However, he didn't have that much money on hand, so he had to borrow from James. If he didn't lie, he definitely wouldn't get the money.
He admitted he felt sorry for his father, but this was what he owed Megan. He hoped that after she left him, she could live well.
Back at the office, Michael called his private lawyer and instructed him on the divorce matters.
"Giving Megan a hundred million dollars during the divorce, plus compensating Austin with a twenty-thousand-square-foot villa and a ten-million-dollar apartment?" The lawyer was shocked by Michael's request.
He often worked for Michael and knew how tight his funds were right now. "But Michael, the Ocean Blue group needs funds urgently."
"I've thought it through. I'll sell a few of the projects I've invested in over the years to get some money back." Michael frowned and said, "This is what I owe Megan."
