Chapter 1252 The Real Reason for Desperately Pursuing You
The other end of the line just went dead quiet.
Everett was like, "What? Did I just blow your cover and now you're feeling all guilty?"
"Nah, I'm just floored by your wild imagination," Cassie replied, sounding kinda helpless. "Look, if you're worried I'll mess with stuff, you can take my blood and hair to Neya City for a paternity test. Everyone there is your crew; let's see how I could possibly mess with it."
"That's overkill," Everett said coolly, "I've already had Olivia and my mom do a paternity test there. She is indeed my mom's biological daughter."
"No way!" Cassie was stunned.
"Like you said, Neya City is my turf, and Olivia couldn't have tampered with it." Everett's voice was dripping with disappointment. "Cassie, I gotta admit, when I was with you, I kinda liked you. Sometimes I even wished you were my real sister, but you're not. And you love to mess with people. Have you lied so much you believe your own BS? The reason I called today is to clear the air. When I first met you, I had no clue who you were. What my mom and Olivia do to you next is outta my hands."
Cassie took a moment, trying to chill out.
Then she said, "Everett, if you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do. But just a heads-up, watch out for Olivia. She's not as simple as she seems. Maybe she's been badmouthing me to you, but you should go to Silverwood and dig deeper."
"Enough, I've already checked out both you and her in Silverwood. Olivia was straight-up."
"I'm not sure how you did that, but most of what you heard is probably just gossip about the Brooks family. You should ask around some of the more influential families in Silverwood to see what Olivia's really like, especially the Jones family and the Lewis family. Both families had noble kids who dated Olivia. I couldn't have bribed her exes, right?" Cassie gave one last warning. "I'm not trying to stir the pot, but Olivia's super sneaky. She's great at playing the weak and kind card. Think about it, if she didn't have any skills, how could she have convinced your mom to drop so much cash to buy the Hernandez group for her, and even put it in her name?"
That last bit hit Everett hard.
He shot back, "You're just trying to stir up trouble."
Cassie added, "Everett, you should know how long Olivia's been back with Isabella. What, two or three years tops? Just tell me, has your mom ever given you billions of dollars?"
"I don't wanna hear it anymore." Everett was done with the convo.
"You need to dig deep on Olivia. Don't let her tear your family apart. And don't forget about Robert and Helen. My grandma got pushed down the stairs by Helen. They went to jail for that. Even when they started Height Architectural Decoration Company, they cut corners and had a terrible rep." Cassie hung up.
She then stood on the balcony, her bright eyes clouded with confusion.
Joseph walked over and gently placed his big hand on her shoulder. "I heard everything."
"Joey." Cassie buried her face in his chest, feeling all kinds of confused. "Everett said he did a paternity test for Olivia and Isabella, and Olivia is Isabella's biological daughter. Then what about me? Who am I? Am I really Isabella's daughter?"
Something she was once so sure of suddenly felt shaky.
"You look so much like Isabella. If you're not her daughter, then whose could you be?" Joseph looked down at the anxious Cassie in his arms, his deep voice soft. "Remember, you did a paternity test with Aiden."
Cassie was stunned and then said, "But..."
"You should've asked Everett what he used for Olivia's paternity test with Isabella. Bet it was hair." Joseph's eyes flashed with insight.
"Is there a problem with hair?" Cassie's clean face showed a hint of confusion.
"If it's hair, it's easier to fake," Joseph said, his tone complex. "Actually, after finding out Declan's wife is your mom, I've been thinking about something."
"What is it? Spill it," Cassie urged anxiously.
"The real reason David chased after you so hard." Joseph stared at her, revealing a doubt. "At first, he might've liked you, admired you, so he pursued you. But later, even after you married me and had kids, he still wouldn't give up. He even insisted on marrying you, knowing you spent your wedding night with me. He was willing to compromise and keep that marriage."
Cassie blinked. "Wasn't it because he didn't get me and wanted to win me over first, and then brutally take revenge?"
"That's what I thought at first, but could there be another reason?" Joseph paused, his gaze becoming sharp. "He might've known long ago that your mom is Declan's wife, a person of high status. Marrying you would boost his status when you and Isabella reunited. Think about it, the son-in-law of the owner of Emerald Haven Island—huge deal, right?"
Cassie's heart pounded. "Now that you mention it, it's really possible. He's a very deep and patient person."
Joseph nodded. "I guess someone as shady as him thought that after marrying you, once Isabella recognized you, he would gain Isabella and Declan's trust. Then, he would use their power to climb to the top of the global wealth stage. By then, when Isabella and Declan were no longer useful, it would be time for him to deal with you."
The more Cassie listened, the more scared she got. "I remember David often collaborated with those assassins in Neya City. Spencer once said that a person from Madison went to Neya City and brought back a group of assassins. Could that person be David?"
"It was definitely him. At that time, David was already working for Marcus. Marcus sent him to Neya City to find assassins. If he happened to see Isabella there, everything makes sense. And Isabella looks a lot like you. Even my dad, after seeing Isabella and then seeing you, was suspicious and wondered if you were mother and daughter," Joseph said, "Marcus could easily find out that Isabella went missing due to a typhoon. Then, by asking the local residents in Neya City about Isabella's past, he could easily find some clues."
