Chapter 1550 You Have the Right to Be Unreasonable
"Wow, you seem pretty experienced. Bet you've had a bunch of girlfriends," Laura teased with a playful grin.
Derek felt a little uneasy. "I remember telling you ages ago that I had a girlfriend back in college."
"College relationships are so pure and unforgettable," Laura cut in, her annoyance growing.
"Are you talking about yourself?" Derek suddenly looked at her and asked.
"No, I'm talking about you. Why are you flipping this on me?" Laura paused for a moment, then glared at him confidently. "Are you dodging the question? Don't answer if you don't want to."
Laura then asked, "Do you think I'm being unreasonable and overly sensitive? Well, you're right. I am being unreasonable and overly sensitive."
Sitting in the back seat, Laura seemed more assertive, even Maeve turned her curious eyes to look at the fierce Laura.
Derek was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled softly, "Alright, your unreasonable and sensitive side is actually kinda cute."
"Cute?" Laura blinked her thick eyelashes.
"If you were always well-behaved and kept everything to yourself, I'd be worried. This is good. As my girlfriend, you have the right to be unreasonable," Derek explained.
Laura didn't say anything, but the slight smile on her lips showed her satisfaction.
"About my first love, it wasn't unforgettable," Derek said, "Everyone was dating in college, and she was pretty, smart, and had a good personality. We dated for a while, but after graduation, we were in different countries, so we broke up."
"Don't tell me you're still friends and she's still hung up on you," Laura pouted, "Joseph's first love caused Cassie a lot of trouble. I don't want any drama queens around you."
"No, I'm not that dumb," Derek shook his head with a smile. "Since I've decided to love you, I won't hurt you. I know you've been hurt a lot, so I'll keep my distance from other women, especially those who aren't family. If you don't trust me, you can check my phone anytime."
"Alright," Laura nodded, satisfied for now. "I don't like being lied to. If I catch you lying once, we're done."
"Okay," Derek nodded indulgently.
After that, he focused on driving.
Laura sat in the back chatting with Maeve. Although Maeve was still young, her curiosity was strong, especially when she saw the scenery outside, her eyes were wide open.
"Maeve, look, that's a big mall, and that's a cake shop," Laura smiled.
Sometimes Derek glanced at the back through the rearview mirror, and the sight of the young and beautiful Laura holding the adorable Maeve was heartwarming.
If he could, he wished this was his wife and child.
But even if it weren't now, it would be in the future.
He couldn't wrap his head around how Michael could leave such a great wife and kid. Maybe Michael really had some issues.
Derek sighed quietly to himself.
Forty minutes later, the car pulled into an unfamiliar neighborhood, and Laura was puzzled. "Where are you taking me?"
"My own place. When I'm too tired to go back to the Presidential Palace, I crash here," Derek replied.
Derek backed the car into a parking spot.
Laura started to feel nervous. He brought her to his place—what was he planning, being alone together like this?
Her nerves were on edge until Maeve's little sounds brought her back to reality.
Maeve was here too, so it wasn't just the two of them.
As long as she held Maeve, he wouldn't try anything.
"Get out." Derek opened the back door and took Maeve out first.
"Why not just go back to the Presidential Palace?" Laura asked as she slowly got out.
"There are servants at the Presidential Palace. It's not convenient for me to hold you there." Derek freed one hand to wrap around Laura's shoulder. "Come on, I'll cook for you."
Laura finally nodded.
The house was over two thousand square feet.
The decor was elegant and warm, clean and tidy.
In the middle of the living room stood a new crib with pink bedding and small toys inside.
The leather sofa had pink plush toys, and the wine cabinet held baby formula and rice cereal instead of wine.
When Laura walked in, she realized it didn't look like a single guy's place at all, but someone who had a child and a wife.
But she knew these items were new, clearly prepared by Derek for Maeve.
Derek went in and put Maeve in the crib. Maeve, seeing so many toys, curiously pressed them and laughed at the familiar music.
"Look, Maeve likes it here," Derek said with a smile.
"You bought so many toys, of course she likes it." Laura glanced at him, but she had to admit his thoughtfulness.
"I want Maeve to be happy. You can bring her here often. I even set up a separate bedroom for her as a playroom. When she starts crawling, she won't be bored."
Derek said as he checked Maeve's diaper, found it wet, and skillfully changed it. Then he took off his jacket and put on an apron. "Sit for a while, I'll cook for you."
They had lived in the Presidential Palace for a while, but Laura didn't know how good his cooking was.
Until he started busying himself in the kitchen, Laura saw his knife skills and guessed his cooking ability. "Great skills."
"My cooking is even better," Derek raised an eyebrow.
"Are all the men in the Jude family good at cooking?" Laura asked, "Michael's cooking was good too. I thought that even though he was harsh, being his wife might not be so bad."
"Usually, men cook better than women. Haven't you noticed most chefs are men?" Derek explained gently, "Of course, I have to admit, the men in the Jude family are good at cooking. But I can guarantee I'm different from Michael. At least when we're together, I won't upset or hurt you."
