Chapter 970 Joseph Was Shy Like A Boy
David started the car with a grim expression. On the way, he called Lola, "Go to the office suite and wait for me."
David needed to vent his anger, so he called Lola.
Just as he was about to reach the company building, David's phone rang again.
"Mr. Foster, Spencer was following you." A voice came.
David pondered, 'Spencer?'
He was shocked. "How long has he been following me?"
"Since you left the Peace Group. Spencer is very careful. If we hadn't had someone watching him and Peter from the start, I might not have noticed it."
"I got it." David gripped his phone tightly and then let out a cold laugh.
Spencer only took orders from Cassie, which meant Cassie had sent Spencer to investigate David.
David thought, 'Was Cassie suspicious of something? I have always been very cautious. Where did I slip up? The most urgent thing is to dispel Cassie's suspicions about me.'
He called Lola again, "You can go back. You don't need to wait for me recently. Cassie suspected me already."
Lola said, "Mr. Foster, why bother that? As long as you don't get a divorce, Cassie can't do anything to you."
"Stop, you idiot," David rebuked mercilessly.
Lola's voice choked with tears. "I just feel heartbroken seeing you carefully trying to please Cassie. It's really unnecessary with your current status."
"My current status?" David sneered coldly. "Just a wretch by Marcus's side."
Lola was aware of this status, but she was uneasy upon hearing that. She thought, 'Marcus is the richest man in Madison. Being his confidant made David one of the top figures in Madison. Could it be David was still unwilling to be under Marcus?'
"Remember, don't let Cassie know you have any connection with me. She will be useful to me in the future," David said, then hung up the phone.
Lola was left bewildered, pondering, 'Could it be that David still wanted to use Cassie against Joseph? But Joseph was already a nobody. Or does Cassie have some other significant identity?'
In the Peace Group office, as soon as Cassie walked in, Joseph called her.
Cassie looked at the number and awkwardly answered, "What's up?"
There were a couple of coughs on the other end, but no one spoke for a long time.
"Joseph, I'm hanging up if you don't speak." Just as Cassie was about to hang up, Joseph's deep and strange voice finally came through.
"Thank you for bringing me back last night and treating my wounds." Joseph was shy, like a boy, which made Cassie feel strange.
"Don't get the wrong idea. I was driving last night and saw someone fighting by the roadside. I didn't know it was you. When I saw you lying in the mud, I felt sorry for you and kindly brought you back." Cassie distanced herself from Joseph. "I would have done the same even if it were a stranger."
Joseph felt a pang of bitterness. Fortunately, he had little hope, and he didn't dare think about the future.
"I have things to do. Goodbye." As Joseph was silent again, Cassie spoke up once more.
"Cassie." Joseph suddenly called out to her, his heavy breathing coming through. "Did you see everything?"
Cassie felt awkward. Could she say she hadn't seen it?
"Which part do you mean?" After a long pause, Cassie said again. "It's none of my business anyway."
Joseph's heart ached, thinking, 'None of her business. How heartless.'
"Yeah, you're right." Joseph gave a self-deprecating smile. "I no longer have the right to be together with you."
Cassie was surprised. She said to herself inwardly, 'The former Joseph would have thrown a fit. Could it be the malfunction of his dick had changed him? Why Joseph changed so much?'
She wanted to ask about that but was afraid he would think she still cared about him.
Joseph continued, "I didn't call for any other reason. I just wanted to thank you. Goodbye. I won't bother you anymore."
After the call ended, Cassie was stunned for a long time. Joseph's cautious tone echoed in her ears, making her feel uncomfortable.
Cassie was used to Joseph's arrogance and domineering attitude. His sudden change was unsettling.
In his house, Joseph opened his laptop and watched the video in his notebook.
It was surveillance footage from three years ago, showing Joseph breaking the legs of some rich guys on a yacht while holding Cassie protectively.
Joseph had wanted to ask Cassie earlier about their relationship three years ago. Why had he broken those rich guys' legs for her? Why did he care so much about those men bullying Cassie?
Joseph knew himself. If he didn't care about someone, he wouldn't have done something that offended so many rich guys.
Unless Joseph already had feelings for Cassie three years ago. But he forgot that later.
If he could forget Cassie, but how could he forget his feelings for her so completely?
Moreover, there were many things Joseph remembered, but the memories of caring about Cassie were mysteriously missing. It seemed like all he remembered were the bad things about Cassie.
Joseph suddenly stood up and drove to Madison's medical university.
He waited for an hour and a half outside an old, vintage building before finally seeing a man in his sixties approaching.
"Harold." Joseph walked over quickly.
"Joseph, what are you doing here?" Harold had been the deputy director of a psychiatric hospital and had treated Joseph's illness when he was young. After retiring, Harold became an honorary professor at the university.
"Harold, I need to ask you something," Joseph said in a low voice.
"Sure, but don't tell me your illness has relapsed?" Harold looked Joseph up and down. "I heard you later found a top psychologist from Austin who cured you."
"I'm fine. I want to ask about something else. Let's talk upstairs."
Upstairs, Harold poured Joseph a glass of water. "Go ahead."
Joseph took it and then slowly began. "Three years ago, my condition relapsed after my mental illness was exposed. My memory got worse, and I forgot many things."
"That's normal." Harold nodded. "People with mental illness often have memory decline, hallucinations, or mental confusion. In severe cases, they might become a murderer."
