Chapter 620
As the workday drew to a close, Felix's voice unexpectedly echoed through Liam's phone. "Liam, I've heard rumors you were beaten?"
Liam's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Who's been spreading such tales?"
"Felix let out a sigh. "It's not just me, Liam. Word has gotten around in the New York circle. Apparently, Joseph barged into your office and attacked you. The news has spread like wildfire."
Liam's grip tightened around his phone, the veins on the back of his hand standing out starkly. His standing in New York had become a laughingstock.
Felix's voice filtered through the speaker, a note of incredulity in his tone. "You're the second young master of the Hernandez family, how could Joseph dare to lay a hand on you? He's crossed a line. Couldn't he have just closed the door and had a civil conversation instead of resorting to violence? Joseph showed you no respect whatsoever."
There was a pause before Felix continued. "Liam, are you really okay with this? If Joseph falls, you'll become the new leader of the Hernandez family."
Liam's response was icy. "What are you implying, Felix?"
"We can work together, we're brothers," Felix proposed. "Look at me, I used to rely on you. In just a few years, the Chamberlain's family has risen to become the second most powerful family in Madison. My status has changed drastically. Don't you want to follow in my footsteps?"
Liam's reply was laced with sarcasm. "I underestimated you before," he admitted, his words heavy with unspoken implications. "Tell me straight, Felix, what do you want from me?"
"Liam, you're a smart man. Let me be frank. Can you get the new chip data from the Hernandez laboratory? Trust me, this could be our chance to overthrow Joseph. Do you really want to live under his thumb forever?"
Liam leaned back, the leather chair cradling his tall figure. "You think highly of me, Felix. These past few years, Joseph has never allowed me near the research department. He's always been wary of me."
Felix's voice was persuasive. "You'll find a way, Liam. Opportunities are given to those who seize them."
Liam traced the scar on his lip, his eyes dark with thought.
At half-past six in the evening, Joseph entered his beachside villa.
The aroma of pan-fried steak wafted from the kitchen. Megan, clad in a cute Japanese-style pink apron adorned with a cartoon cat, emerged from the kitchen. Underneath the apron, she wore a pristine white dress, seemingly untouched by any speck of dust.
Yet, Joseph's mind wandered to Cassie, who had been cooking in the kitchen earlier that day. Her neat ponytail, casual beige attire, and an aura of nonchalance tinged with an inexplicable charm.
"You're daydreaming," Megan teased, playfully punching Joseph's chest. "What's on your mind?"
Joseph blinked, his brows furrowing. "I was just wondering why you're cooking today." Had he zoned out without realizing it?
Megan's smile was bright. "Am I not allowed? It's been a while since we had a candlelit dinner. I personally prepared the steak today. How about we pair it with some red wine later?"
Joseph agreed absentmindedly, his gaze falling on Megan's innocent smile. He found himself recalling Liam's words. Could it be true that Cassie didn't have depression three years ago and that it was induced by medication?
If that were the case, Megan had been deceiving him, feigning depression, and tricking him into treating her like a mental patient.
Had Megan not "died" three years ago, Joseph might have sent her to a mental institution, where she would have lost her sanity by now.
The thought sent a chill down his spine.
Megan shifted uncomfortably under his intense gaze. "What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that all of a sudden?"
Joseph's eyes bore into hers, sharp and probing. "Megan, did you really suffer from depression three years ago?"
