Chapter 1460 Suspicion
Joseph's face was tight with anger. "Michael, you can't just waltz into my place like this."
"Joseph, your main supporters are Declan and my uncle. But Declan's out of the country, and my uncle's still family," Michael shot back, glaring. "I didn't want it to come to this, but you left me no choice."
"I left you no choice?" Joseph was beyond disappointed.
EchoReach's crew was tearing through the estate, even bothering Mildred and Walter.
"Michael, what's going on at this hour?" Walter asked, looking at Michael, who was stone-faced and clearly not explaining anything.
"Grandpa, it's nothing," Joseph tried to reassure him quickly. Finally, Dragon's crew showed up.
EchoReach and Dragon's guys started brawling right there in the estate.
It wasn't until the cops showed up that things calmed down.
But it was Michael who called the cops, accusing Joseph and Cassie of kidnapping.
Cassie was livid. "Michael, you lost Laura for Megan. Now you're gonna lose Joseph as a friend for her too?"
Cassie wasn't scared of the cops; she and Joseph hadn't done anything wrong. Even if the cops investigated, they wouldn't find anything. But making a scene would hurt the Hernandez Group. The company was just starting to bounce back after David nearly wrecked it, and more bad press would be a nightmare.
That's why Cassie and Joseph had put up with Megan for so long.
But Michael going this far for Megan was a shock to everyone.
"If you hand her over now, for the sake of our friendship, I can let this slide," Michael said, fists clenched, giving Joseph one last chance.
"She's not here. I can't hand her over," Joseph replied, done with this former friend.
"Fine, if you won't hand her over, don't blame me when I find proof," Michael said, eyes full of disappointment as he got in his car and drove off.
Michael headed to the hospital, and after a night of digging, he made some progress.
Back at the estate, after Michael left, Joseph went to his room and saw a bunch of missed calls from Lucas.
Joseph called back right away. When Lucas picked up, he asked, "I heard Michael caused a ruckus at the Hernandez House?"
"Yeah, he even busted down the gate," Joseph said, frowning. "What's up with Megan?"
"It really wasn't you?" Lucas asked seriously. "As a friend, tell me the truth."
Joseph sighed. "I was planning to act the day Megan went to the airport. Her disappearing today has nothing to do with me."
Lucas believed him. "I can tell. If you had done it, you would've expected Michael to show up. Knowing you, you would've had your guys ready, and he wouldn't have gotten in."
Joseph gave a bitter smile. "You know me too well."
Sadly, despite knowing Joseph for so long, Michael seemed to understand him less and less.
"Michael knows you too, but he loses it whenever Megan's involved," Lucas said, shaking his head.
"Don't even start. There's no trust left between me and him," Joseph replied with a bitter laugh. "But I am curious who actually snatched Megan."
"She might have other enemies," Lucas said, taking a drag from his cigarette. "I checked at the hospital overnight. At nine last night, someone pretending to be a doctor visited Megan. They knocked out both the nurse and Megan, tied her up, and lowered her out the window. Someone on the roof used a rope to take her away."
Joseph was taken aback. "Megan and the nurse were in the ward. How did they get knocked out without making a sound?"
"That's the weird part," Lucas mused. "But the nurse said Megan went to bed early last night. I think Megan was already out cold before the 'doctor' showed up. How they did it, I don't know."
"Probably something in her meds or daily stuff," Joseph guessed. "Whoever did this was thorough. If it's revenge, Megan might not make it."
"Don't worry. Since she vanished from my hospital, I'll help you figure it out. Even if Michael calls the cops, they won't find anything on you."
At the hospital, Lucas put down his phone and stared out the window as the sky started to lighten.
After a bit, one of Lucas's guys came in. "Mr. Nelson, I talked to the nurse. Megan said she was tired early last night. Usually, her wounds hurt until one or two in the morning. I think someone messed with her body. But I checked; there was nothing wrong with her meds. Her food and drink were arranged by Michael, and the nurse said Megan didn't eat much last night because of her stomach. The only possibility is..."
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Go on."
The guy stepped closer and whispered, "Toothpaste. I tested a bit of Megan's toothpaste and found traces of a drug. Just a tiny amount in the mouth would make someone drowsy."
Lucas's eyes widened. He suddenly remembered something. Yesterday, he had taken Bernice to see Megan, and later Bernice had gone to the bathroom. So, she could have had access to the toothpaste.
He suddenly grabbed his guy by the collar. "Where's that toothpaste?"
"It's still in the bathroom. But only the front part of the toothpaste should be affected. If we don't tell Michael, he won't know," the guy said cautiously. "I remember you said if Mr. Hernandez did this, we should erase any evidence quietly. So, I didn't tell Michael."
"Don't mention this again," Lucas said coldly. "Who visited Megan's ward yesterday?"
"Not many. Just Michael, the nurse, Sarah, and you and Ms. Ramsey," the guy said, his eyes suddenly looking suspicious.
"Any progress on Michael's side?" Lucas asked abruptly.
"Yeah, EchoReach's people got the hospital's surveillance footage first thing in the morning. Megan was taken from the roof. If they check for suspicious people entering or leaving the roof at that time, it won't take long to find her," the guy said. "They must have taken Megan away by car. Once they find the car, it will be easy to trace."
