Chapter 1140 Laura Is Truly Good

At that moment, those beautiful eyes mocked him.

"Laura," Benjamin stammered, "What are you doing here?"

"If I weren't here, how could I hear you whining about our past, acting like you suffered so much while dating me?" Laura sneered.

Benjamin felt a wave of shame.

He remembered Michael's words; he had only mentioned Laura's bad sides.

Laura had her good moments too.

But now wasn't the time to bring that up.

"Laura, can't we end things on good terms?" he pleaded. "You're in a high position now, and Isla is a nobody. Let the past go."

"Sure, we can be done, but Isla owes me, and that's not over," Laura said coldly. "You better leave Isla soon, or I won't spare the Hayes family."

Benjamin trembled. Laura had a powerful, icy demeanor he hadn't seen before.

She seemed like a ruler, and he felt like nothing.

This made him feel angry and humiliated.

"Not leaving? Do I need to call security?" Michael walked over, raising an eyebrow with a smirk.

Benjamin clenched his fists and left without looking back.

"When did you get here? Why are you here?" Michael asked nervously once Benjamin was gone.

"About the formula, the company still owes me a million dollars. I need your signature," Laura said, handing him a document.

"Alright, I thought you came to thank me for dealing with him," Michael said, signing the document.

"You made me like this, and you want thanks?" Laura snorted.

"Are you satisfied now? You said if I dealt with the Hayes Group, our grudges would be somewhat resolved," Michael said awkwardly. "I did my best. The Hayes Group's reputation is in the gutter. If the regulatory bureau keeps delaying their most profitable products, they'll face a financial crisis."

Laura looked at him.

Michael always seemed gullible and easily deceived by women.

But hearing him scold Benjamin was satisfying.

She didn't expect him to say those things.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Michael asked, feeling nervous under her gaze.

"Rare indeed," Laura smiled. "Actually, as long as you don't date Megan, you're not that stupid."

Michael glared at her.

Laura blinked. "What are you glaring at? My status is higher than yours now; I can crush you."

Michael thought, 'Didn't I just say that to Benjamin?'

"Forget it. Since you helped me, I'll treat you to a meal," Laura said. "There's a nice restaurant downstairs; I'll treat you."

Michael was taken aback but flattered. "Sure."

It was almost quitting time.

Michael quickly shut down his computer and headed downstairs with her.

The restaurant was in a nearby building. Michael glanced at the menu and said, "This place is too low-end."

"Come on! I'm treating you, and you expect it to be fancy?" Laura teased. "You're not worth more than five hundred dollars."

Michael was speechless. "I can treat you. I don't let women pay."

"No, I said I'll treat you," Laura insisted.

"Then I'll treat you next time," Michael quickly replied.

Laura gave him a forced smile. "Michael, don't see me as a way to get back into the Jude family. I'll talk to Eric and get them to agree to let you return. I have a child of the Jude family now; they'll listen to me."

Michael was stunned, not expecting her kindness. "Why are you helping me? Eric actually suggested I marry you into the Jude family, hoping the child could have a complete family."

"If we don't love each other, even if we stay together, the child won't have a complete family," Laura shook her head.

"Don't you hate me? You were so emotional last time," Michael hesitated. "I can tell you don't like your current life."

"But I have no choice. The doctor said if I abort this child, I might never have another. And now the child is three months old; it's even more impossible to abort. It's my fate," Laura said with regret. "The past can't be changed, but I can control the future. I don't want others to manipulate my fate."

"I'm sorry," Michael said, looking at her. He felt Laura was quite pitiful.

Especially after meeting Benjamin, he realized Laura wasn't much better off in love than he was.

"Caroline and James also hope you can return to the Jude family. Caroline gets sad when talking about you. She says she doesn't care, but I can tell she does," Laura said. "Honestly, I do hate you, but I understand your feelings for Megan. Sometimes, you can't control who you fall for. But I hope you'll think more about the family members who love you. Don't hurt them because of your selfishness. Love who you want, but not at the expense of hurting people."

These past few days, perhaps spurred by Benjamin, Laura had come to terms with things.

It was pointless to keep hating Michael.

Hadn't she foolishly loved Benjamin for so many years?

The saddest part was that she gave so much, yet in Benjamin's eyes, it was all bad.

She smiled and took a big sip of her tea.

Michael pursed his lips, deeply surprised by Laura's words.

He finally understood why the Judes said Laura was good.

He thought, 'Laura is truly good. How could I have abandoned the Jude family, her, and the child for Megan back then?'
