Chapter 1280: I Was Abandoned, I Am Sad

"Don't."

Cassie grabbed his wrist, her voice all raspy and heart-wrenching. "No, you were right there. Did you see him messing with me?"

Joseph was all kinds of confused.

He'd only caught bits and pieces of Cassie and that guy's convo, but none of it made sense to him.

But there wasn't any bullying, at least no hitting.

"Then why are you crying?" Joseph was freaking out. Seeing her cry tore him up inside.

"Just remembered some bad stuff." Cassie forced a smile. "Let's get in the car."

On the drive back, Joseph was still stewing over it.

Cassie cried when she thought of bad stuff, so she should've laughed when she thought of good stuff, right?

But how could he make her happy?

He rested his cheeks in his hands, puffing them out a bit, looking super cute.

But Cassie was lost in thoughts about Olivia, not really noticing.

When they pulled up to the estate, the car had barely stopped.

Sophia and Oliver came charging out like a tornado.

"Mommy, Joey!"

Sophia latched onto Cassie with a bear hug. "Mommy, I missed you so much."

"I missed you too," Cassie said. She suddenly noticed Cameron and Mabel. It was only nine in the morning, and Cameron was already here. Wasn't it too early?

And why did Cameron and Mabel seem so off?

She remembered last night when she left, Sophia was begging her grandparents to sleep with her.

Did they actually sleep with Sophia?

Cassie felt a bit awkward. She quickly played it cool and picked up Sophia. "Feeling better? Still scared? Did you sleep okay last night?"

Sophia pouted, and Oliver chimed in, "She woke up crying a bunch of times. It was so annoying."

"If you almost got pushed into a pond, you'd be scared and cry at night too," Sophia snapped back. "But luckily, Grandpa and Grandma slept with me last night."

Mabel and Cameron were silent.

The two of them, almost a hundred years old combined, were now fully embarrassed, especially Mabel, whose face was turning red.

She always kept herself looking good. She had that classy vibe from growing up rich. She looked like someone who'd found love again in middle age, like she'd turned back the clock ten years, even her eyes were sparkling.

Cassie silently marveled at what love could do.

Actually, if it weren't for Marcus's lover causing trouble back then, Mabel and Cameron might never have split up, and they might have been a loving couple.

Poor Liam and Joseph.

"Mommy, why are you zoning out?" Oliver shook Cassie's hand.

"Nothing," Cassie smiled, then looked at Cameron and Mabel. "Thanks for everything these days."

"No, we should thank you for taking care of Joseph," Mabel quickly shifted the topic to something less awkward. "Let's go inside."

The group headed inside, but after a bit, they realized someone was missing.

They turned around and saw Joseph still standing there, pouting. He looked like he was about to cry, feeling all abandoned and sad.

Cassie and the gang felt like total jerks, like they’d just ditched the little guy.

Mabel, feeling extra guilty as a mom, quickly said, "Joey, come here, I got a cake made just for you."

Joseph wasn’t having it. He just glared at Cassie, "I'm mad. You ignored me."

"I didn’t ignore you, I thought you’d follow," Cassie said awkwardly, rushing back to grab his hand. "I missed Oliver and Sophia."

Joseph glanced at Sophia and Oliver, then said, "You have me. Why do you need to miss them?"

Oliver frowned, and Sophia blew up, "That's too much! She's our mommy, and you're fighting with us for her."

Joseph was taken aback. Even he knew parents were a big deal, and every kid had them.

He pouted, bit his lip, and started crying, "I don't have a mommy, I don't."

Cassie felt super awkward.

Sophia was stunned, feeling like she’d done something terrible.

Mabel stepped forward, trying to soothe him, "Joey, don’t cry. I’m your mommy, and this is your daddy."

"Yeah, I’m your daddy," Cameron added, looking a bit lost.

Both of them were powerhouses in the business world but clueless about handling a crying Joseph.

Joseph looked at them, then at Cassie, and cried even harder, "I don’t want you. My mommy and daddy are so old."

Being called old hit Cameron and Mabel like a ton of bricks.

They weren’t that old, just fifty, and they looked pretty good for their age.

Mabel said, "We’re not old, you’re just too young."

Cameron nodded in agreement. Even though the doctor said not to upset their son, being called old was a tough pill to swallow.

"I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear it," Joseph covered his ears, "I’m only two."

Cassie felt dizzy. Normally, she could play along, but not about the parents.

She pulled Joseph’s hands away and said seriously, "Stop crying."

Seeing her serious look, Joseph immediately stopped, just sniffling, tears still on his face, making everyone feel sorry for him.

"Joey, listen to me," Cassie wiped his tears. "Parents are a gift from heaven. Mabel is your mommy. How can you call her old? Do you know how hard it was for her to give birth to you? And Cameron, he’s your daddy. Kids should respect their parents. If you don’t, you’re not a good baby."

"I’m a good baby," Joseph said seriously, looking a bit flustered.

"Then be polite to your parents," Cassie continued.

"Oh, okay," Joseph said softly, looking at Mabel and Cameron. "Mommy, Daddy, I’m sorry."

"It’s okay," Mabel said, her heart melting, eyes a bit red. She’d missed Joseph’s childhood but didn’t expect him to respect her like this one day.

Cameron felt the same, but as a man, he couldn’t let his eyes get red, no matter how emotional he felt.

As a father, he’d been too negligent, missing Liam and Joseph’s childhood. This was a chance to reconnect with his son.

"It’s okay," he waved his hand. "Go inside with Cassie. I’ll have a smoke."
