Chapter 177
""...""
Impressive, she was really challenging the heavens now.
Daring to tug at his ear, although her touch was light and even sparked a current through him, he was still her master.
""Cassie, do you even remember who you are?"" Joseph glared at her expressionlessly.
Unintimidated, Cassie assured herself, just this once, if it was all a misunderstanding, she would dutifully play her part – stick to the script and guard her heart.
""I remember, but usually rich men who keep a woman just give them money to make them behave. They don't monitor every move 24/7 or rush to their rescue without a second thought when they're in danger. And when I'm overwhelmed at work, you secretly help me out,"" she pointed out.
""Besides, your left hand is perfectly capable, yet you keep having me feed you.""
""If it was just laziness, you could simply order me, but you lied instead – that shows a guilty conscience.""
Cassie looked at him earnestly, ""Joey, is admitting you like me that hard? I like you too.""
In the reflection of her pupils, his silhouette echoed back at him. At first, Joseph felt embarrassingly exposed, almost shamefully so. He hadn't expected her to see through the careful facade he'd kept up for days.
But then she said the words – ""I like you too"" – and his heart kicked into overdrive. Oddly enough, even though he'd known about her feelings for some time, it was only today that the truth hit home with an extra punch of reality, lifting his spirits.
Yet his handsome face remained impassive.
Cassie's gaze dropped, her disappointment sinking in. Clearly, he remained unfazed. Perhaps she'd been hoping for too much. ""If you don't feel the same, forget I said anything. I won't ask again. I'm going to wash my face,"" she said, swinging her legs off the bed and slipping into her shoes.
Joseph watched her retreat, her slender figure tinged with a mix of hope and melancholy. A nagging sensation told him that if he didn't speak up, he might lose her bit by bit.
""Cassie, are you some little devil sent to torture me?"" he blurted out, pulling her close with a touch of irritation in his tone.
Her head bumped against his chest – painfully so – but when she looked up into his deep, helpless eyes, a wave of incredible joy surged within her.
She arched an eyebrow, her shiny eyes wide with a mischievous twinkle, ""I have no idea what you're talking about.""
""Still playing coy,"" Joseph muttered, burying his face in her hair, his voice hoarse and resigned, ""You always say your only good trait is cooking. You're a trouble magnet – my bad luck.""
Was this a roundabout way of admitting he cared for her too? Cassie felt like crying but couldn't. After all, she was starting to like him more as well. Conveniently, he was now her husband. She wanted to give them both a chance and turned to wrap her arms around him.
Joseph enjoyed her clinginess. He bent down to capture her soft lips with his own. It seemed both understood each other a little better now, and any resistance or caution in Cassie's heart melted away.
Nearly losing control as he deepened the kiss, he murmured, ""Stay in bed with me a little longer. I'm exhausted.""
""Mhm,"" she agreed, snuggling into his embrace. Cassie wasn't sleepy anymore, but she could sense his weariness and complied, soon lulled by the rhythm of his steady breathing. Looking up at the shadows under his eyes, she could tell he was truly worn out – and it was all because of her.
How wonderful this was, she thought. Despite the emptiness of being without family, she had him now."
